GenConfusion: Thanks...that utility is da bomb.

Bovrillor: I would highly recommend using 'Directdraw compatibility tool 1.1' instead (mentioned further down in this thread) - it's 100% stable and doesn't compromise critical system threads to operate. PSS is more of a 'bodge' - and anything that works with one method should work with the other as well.

In short, DCT1.1 is MUCH better.
Thank you I will do that instead.

You're more than welcome :)

Gog really ought to look into this registry tweak, since a large chunk of their content is pre-DX8 and requires this method to function on windows vista/seven with integrated graphics.
I have a problem with fallout 1 and 2 on my win7 laptop. Everytime i play it, colors show up and i cant see the numbers on the character generator. I have played fallout 1 and 2 on my desktop vista pc with no problem, but this wont on my laptop. Is there a mod that i can use to combat this, i am using the 3 pack cd version from bestbuy and not the gog version, if that helps. Ive tried everything that was already mentioned with little success.

Deathknight, your description of the problem is a little lacking. With some more detail it would be easier to help. What do you mean by 'colours show up'? Are you saying that the colours are mixed-up?

I'll re-explain the process since this thread isn't totally clear.

1) Check you have the windows version of Fallout.

2) Install Fallout to D:\Fallout, or somewhere other than 'Program Files'. It will NOT work properly in the default directory.

3) Open your Fallout folder and delete ddraw.dll

4) Google DirectDraw Compatibility Tool 1.1 and download it. Run the program, and navigate to your FalloutW.exe file. Then click 'apply'. You only need to do this once.

5) Your copy of Fallout should now work correctly. The windows registry has been told to run it in a special compatibility mode. Make sure you have all other windows compatibilty features turned off. You do not need any other patches or mods.

6) If it's still not working, you have a more serious problem - either with your computer or your video drivers. If you've followed my instructions and are still having trouble, it would help if you could provide a screenshot of the problem.

Hope this helps.
i think that the disc is the problem. i just purchased it from gog to see if that works. if that doesnt then fuck it, at least i tried.
Any joy mate?

I suspect the collection version was modified in some way by the publisher. At least you can play Fallout now, and the cost was minimal :)
Didn't want to create a new thread, but every time I try to run Fallout 1, it gives me "Failure initializing input devices". I've tried everything from re-installing the game TO deleting my ddraw.dll TO applying all the patches (including the High-res patch) TO editing my fallout.cfg and changing the "times_run" counter to 0. Nothing works.

However, the game did work the very first time I ran it (right after installing it) and it even worked after applying all the patches that are listed in the sticky on here. But I had no time to play it that night, and when I tried running it today...this happened.
Are you playing on a laptop? Perhaps it doesn't recognise your trackpad, and you had a mouse plugged in before?

'Input Device' suggests something like that...
