Unfortunatly I don't think thats possible, you can get a mod that allows you to continue playing after completeing the game though. Its linked in the fallout mod thread in this forum. This would allow you to complete the game and then go about and explore, max out afterwards, its not ideal but its better then nothing.
Are you talking about Fallout 1 or Fallout 2?
If you are talking about Fallout 1, focus on getting the water chip as soon as possible. Then you can go on your merry way to do all of the side quests before the end game.
Given you do all of that within 13 game years, which is possible.
I think there is a mod that removes the time limit
I don't know the name of it though, but No Mutant Allowed will have it if it exists
Good luck
Thanks guys, by the way i was talking about fallout 1:)
but may i ask a different question?
doesnt fallout 2 take place after fallout 1, or is it a differnt person in a different place?
thanks:)

It's been some years since I played Fallout 1 and 2. I don't remember a time limit to either of them though. Do you mean the time before you have to find the water chip and take it to your vault? If so then once you've returned it the game isn't over, you can then go and do more. Not sure about the 13 years that Shalgroth mentioned though.
As for the two games, yes, Fallout 2 takes place some years later. The character you play in Fallout 2, without giving away too much, is a decendent of the character you play in Fallout 1.
yh there is a 150 day limit to get the waterchip and i didnt know you can still play after the water chip so i was doing evrything i could before getting the water chip and then ran short of days.
thanks about the info on fallout 2
:)

Hey Slifer
You do indeed have a 150 day time limit to get the water chip, as thats how much time is estimated before the resources at the vault you came out of run out.
But actually the water chip is only a fraction of the game, its not actually the main "quest".
Once you get it and return it, you have a more stuff to do and an almost limitless time to do it.
I dont want to spoil it for you but Shalgroth is right after that there is a 13 game year time limit, trust me its enough time to do everything.
I suggest going to gamefaqs.com and looking up a walkthrough, many great ones on there and you can pretty much beat the game and level up and all that without patches if you follow them.
Fallout is a great game, dont get deter by the waterchip, stick with it and you'll find a classic game that has so much replay to it.....
Sfall gives you the option to change or remove the time limit.
http://falloutmods.wikia.com/wiki/Sfall
Im actually using the SFall mod, mostly to speed the game up and for the mouse wheel, but how do you adjust the time limit, and i hear it only applies to the 13 year mutant threat limit and not the waterchip time limit is that true? But the waterchip timer never affected my game anyway just curious about the mutant threat..
Why not slow the timer down to a crawl instead of removing it? Btw I'd also like a mod like this because screwing around and exploration and stuff like that.

In the original Fallout, there is a way to 'slow the timer to a crawl' in the gameplay but...

1. Delaying the deadline will cost the player

2. I cannot tell you why it will cost the player as it will spoil some details in the story.

As someone in this stack of replies has mentioned, [paraphrasing ]"trust, there is more than enough time to do everything in-game."
Yes, you can extend the time limit by doing certain things in-game. You'll have to figure out how to do it, but it's not hard.

Finding the water chip also isn't particularly hard. Just make finding it your number one priority, pay close attention to every possible hint or lead you discover, and don't dawdle.

It is very easy to finish the game with out worrying about the time limit. No need to do anything about it I say.
