Although I get "could not create display buffers." with wine 1.1.17, the game works properly with Cedega 7.1.1.
One weird thing : I couldn't click in the installer on the "install" button, but I managed to push it with "tab + enter".

I also had this issue. I clicked on the options button and highlighted the location field and hit enter twice to get mine to install.
You can also change the engine verion to sporetrial and the game runs fairly smoothly. For some reason, the sound was very poor until I changed the audio device to OSS and activated MMap
