I got Fallout Tactics when I bought the original Fallout the other day and didn't install it until this evening. I can start the game and play fine for a little while, but after a couple of minutes, the game starts slowing down quite heavily: it hangs for a second whenever I switch from outdoors to indoors or try to bring up a menu.
It's especially bad when I enter turn-based combat, as the game slows to a virtually unplayable crawl. For the record, I'm running Vista on a 2GHz Core 2 Duo/2Gb RAM/GeForce 8600GS machine, so I'm a bit puzzled as to what's causing the slow-downs.
Anyone got any suggestions?

You could try turning off the antialias settings in the options menu. I remember my old computer, which still was more than beefy enough for a 2001 game, having some extreme slowdowns on occasion if I had the antialiasing on.
Hey, I owned this game years ago and I had the same problem, I remember reading that they released a new patch to rectify the problem. It was something to do with the way the game was using the computers RAM.
Sorry I cant be any further help, this might put you in the right direction though.
I've deactivate AA and that makes no difference, sadly.
As for the patch, the GOG version of Fallout Tactics is patched to the latest patch, and I tried the Fallout Tactics optimiser utility that was on NMA - that doesn't do anything except garble the text in my hotkeys window.
Bump!
Still haven't found a solution to this, sadly. :(
Maybe there's more than one possible cause of slowdowns, because my "indoor outdoor transitions are slow" problem goes away when I turn off antialiased tiles.
Suits me fine, because I can't really see the difference. Antialiased characters make a big difference to visual quality, for me, but that doesn't affect the slow transitions problem.
Pity it doesn't work for you. :-(
Bump!
I also have this problem. Being anywhere except for the main menu is VERY laggy, and not enjoyable to endure. Turning off AA didn't help. Anyone with this issue ever find a fix for it?

try renaming ddraw.dll
i have no idea why, but my fallout went from jittery and laggy to super smooth as soon as i tried this little trick
EDIT: that works in fallout 1, FOT probably doesnt even have that file. i'm an idiot...

Fallout Tactics is a badly programmed game. There's only some much you can do.
My question is that has the GOG team made some changes to the game? Because I've been thinking of buying it from here (I have the old non-GOG version myself) if there's any chance that it would work better?
I've tried to get Fallout Tactics to run in Windows 7 for a while now, without any luck. It starts okay, but usually the starting video hangs (the planet). I can get to the main screen but the mouse updates about once in 15 seconds, so usually I struggle just to exit the game. Some rare occasions it seems to run fine for a minute, but I never get past the character creation when it gets like this again. I've tried the patches, compatibility modes, disabling uac and all but nothing seems to work.
Now I know that Windows 7 is still beta and all, but seems like some people are having same kind of problems in Vista...
I still have the CD version of this game, and have tried installing and playing it on Vista 32-bit with the exact same issues. At this point, and after talking with other owners of Dell laptops with the 8600M GT or GS, I'm beginning to think it's the video card and not the game. If you have a Dell laptop with this card, look into a possible enhancement offer such as this one:
