I am going to a different country for vacation, so the only computer that I'm taking with me is a laptop. I have been playing Fallout (1) on my computer (Windows, if it helps) and want to move my save files over to the laptop, but I can't seem to find it's location. I've tried Appdata>Local>Gog.com>Fallout, and it yielded no results. I'd appreciate any help, preferably before I leave on the 20th.

I think I found it! Try C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Fallout\DATA\SAVEGAME\

Then each save is its own folder, SLOT01, SLOT02...

It did bring me to an existing file, but it's empty. In my game, it does have all the save slots ready and working though, so I don't know what could be happening. The only files in Fallout>data that isn't empty is Scripts, sound and text. The maps and savegame files are empty. :/
Just do a search for SLOT01, SLOT02, etc. and you should find them wherever they are. Just double-check and make sure there are files inside them before you copy them. Also make sure to turn on the option to show hidden files, if you haven't already.

If the save folders at C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Fallout\DATA\SAVEGAME\ are empty, it means you probably haven't been running the game as administrator.

Without admin permissions, the game can't write to its own directory, so it uses some kind of jury-rigged method of saving without creating new files (this is true of many GOG games).

I don't know how it does this exactly, but I do know that it makes your saves _highly_ prone to corruption. It also means there are probably no save files as such to be found. If I had to guess, I'd say the game probably writes save data into existing game files.

Your best bet might be to copy the entire installation of Fallout to your laptop. To do this, I would install Fallout on the laptop first (install into the default path), then replace as many game files as possible with those from your PC installation. If you're lucky, you will have imported your save data. Run the game (in this case, NOT as admin) and hopefully your saves will be there.

I don't know if you're going to find your saves or not (I hope you do!), but there is a lesson to be learned: always, always, ALWAYS run GOG games as admin, either by right-clicking the game's shortcut and choosing 1. "Run as Administrator", or 2. "Properties", going to the "Compatibility" tab, and checking the "Run as Administrator" box. Alternatively, I think you can install outside of the program files (x86) directory for the same results.

GOG, if you're listening, all users should be warned about not running as admin! Either that or change the installers' default path to something that doesn't require admin permissions to manipulate!

Good luck!

For all the mac users out there, here is how to find the save games and save character files on Fallout 1 GOG on Mac OSX 10.8.x

1. By default, the /user/Library folder is hidden. You will need to make it visible again.
Launch Terminal, and type in

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

This will permanently reveal the /[User]/Library folder. OSX hides this so you don't accidentally screw around and break something.

2. Now, navigate to this folder.

Macintosh HD/Users/[your user account]/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States/com.gog.fallout

Now, when you open this folder, you will see a file called Current.boxerstate. Right click on this file, and select "Open Package Contents".

Voila! Here you will find everything you need. (See attached image)

***** If anyone finds out how to use a character editor for the mac to edit these files, please share!!!!

Take a look in \Users\CurrentUser\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\

in windows OS's games tend to store savefiles and other data in "your username"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore" then just mirror your games install directory either in programfiles or programfiles (x86)

If you want to use mods (like FIXT) then you must start a new game. Sorry.

As the person above said, it will not work if you install a mod.
If you don't want to lose your items and progress, you can do this with a save editor.
Create a new character and edit it with a program, like f1se:
