I've never been able to play Fallout more than a few minutes because I keep getting "black-outs" as well as funky colors and numerous error messages and crashes. I haven't been able to figure out what the proper compatibility settings are. I've tried tons of different combinations. Patches don't seem to fix the issues, nor are they intended to, according to a modder at nma-fallout.com.

I would be eternally grateful if someone could help me resolve these issues.

On a side note, does anyone know if there is any difference in the GOG and Steam versions of Fallout?

I think this is an issue with DirectDraw, specifically the file ddraw.dll. There are some other posts around the forums talking about similar issues. I think the solution is to rename the file or something. Let me check...

OK, try this thread to start. Looks like it's settings in ddraw.ini and sfall.ini you can try:

What version of Fallout are you using? I have Win7 x64 and I'm playing GOG's Fallout crash-free. No mods, no patches, just plain GOG installer and it works. Although I'm still in the beginning of the game I've had more than few hours without single problem...
I recommend applying the mods and patches in this post. They fixed all my issues with crashing/blackouts. You can skip over most of it, as most likely the fixes came about because of sfall.
I have the Steam version. Perhaps I should be using GOG's version instead. I do own that one as well.

Spectro: It's definitely worth a try. This version works for me, as I said before.

This link should help you with any display problems you are having. And there are at least a few methods on there that should work reliably.
