wdluense3: Do you have anything related to FO3 in your Documents > My Games folder? If you have a Fallout3 folder in My Games you should either back it up and/or delete it. Once it is deleted I need you to start FO3 from FalloutLauncher.exe, then go to Options and set everything to what you want. Make sure that your Resolution is listed and set to the correct one. If it does not show your resolution let me know because I had to manually set mine because 1920x1080 was not listed which caused issues. Once you have the graphics set to what you would like, hit OK and then hit PLAY. If you have any more problems let me know.

lordDart_DB: I have this problem, I do what you say, and it doesn't work. What can I do for fix it?
The files you want to delete are FALLOUT.INI and FalloutPrefs.ini located in your Fallout3 folder.

What graphics card are you using?

I dont know exactly, but this isn't the problem. One year ago I played Fallout 3, and I don't remember how I made it works

What exactly is the problem you are having? Did the same problem happen before you found a fix the last time?

PatrickMMcNamee: This fix didn't work for me. I've deleted the Documents/MyGames/Fallout 3 folder from Steam, but the game still CTDs after clicking on "Play" in the launcher. I get a black screen with a light-color box in the upper left corner, then it's immediately back to desktop.
****EDIT****
The launcher has my resolution selectible (1920x1080). I click the button for "Ultra" settings, then close the options panel, click on "Play" ...

My specs: OS: Win 10 Pro CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X, RAM: 32GB DDR4, GPU: RTX 2080 SUPER, SSD: 90GB free space.

****UPDATE****
Deleting the .INI files from the Documents/MyGames/Fallout3 folder after opening the launcher, but before clicking on "Play" solved the issue!
I thought Deleting was the dumbest way to fix it, but when it actually fixed it I busted out laughing. If not for you I would still be unable to play my game. I humbly thank you PatrickMMcNamee.
Hi, i was readint his last night i had the same problems and i fixed it.

-------------------------Wot i did-----------------------------------

So i noticed it was running on windows mode... i don't like windows mode so i reduced the resolsution whilst still keeping it on ultra success!!!!, i also downloaded the anti stutter mod at nexus mods.

then for wahtever reason it was wayyyyy to fast, so i went into my nvidea control pannel and put a hard FPS limit on the program settings for fall outt of 60
Underrated thread.
GOG is definitely the Fallout 3 version to get for trouble free out of the box.

In looking over the fix(es) which seem to be the result of cleaning up after a previous version install from another vendor, there is still not much to do in order to get the GOG version working.

Intriguingly my interest in the game came as the result of my then 70+ year old father buying the game when Vista was around (or maybe it was XP) and getting stuck on a mission I helped get him out of.

On subsequent OS's it was largly getting rid of Windows Live files to get the game running for Win 8.1 (I have both DISK and GOG (it was just easer to download GOG Fallout 3 than to relocate my disks)

Thank you for sharing that! It's the only thing that fixed my issue. Appreciate it!!!
Update: Fixed it!

Tweaking the .ini files didn't work for me but downloading the mod below did. I ignored the advice from other threads that recommended this mod because I don't have Intel graphics or Nvidia graphics, so I figured the mod didn't apply to me. Nevertheless, it fixed the crashes.

Resurrecting this old thread...

Just bought & installed this game on my Windows 10 Pro with Ryzen 9 + Radeon RX 6600 XT and it crashes to desktop right after selecting "New Game."

I've tried different graphic options, like window vs. full-screen and different resolutions, but no joy. I do get a Windows pop-up every time I launch the game warning me that "This app may not work correctly... because it causes security or performance issues on Windows."

Any updated hints, tips, or tricks?
