I was able to download the game but once I click "new" start a new game, the game immediately shuts down and the program closes.

Try to launch the game using windows xp (sp3) compatibility mode, and run as administrator

This is generally the fix. Try compatibility in XP or Win 7 if XP doesn't seem to work.
