Hi everybody. I've searched and read a lot of threads relating to Fallout 2 playing at extremely slow/choppy/laggy framerates, and I have yet to find a solution to fix the issue. The mouse moves very slowly even with sensitivity jacked through the roof. The character runs to his/her target space slowly, too, and combat takes forever to play out.

I tried deleting/renaming the ddraw.dll file, and the game started up with messy colours then still played slow.

I installed the 1000-bug-fix patch and started a new game, and it still played slow.

I looked for the SFall fix, however the only downloads I can find are for Windows.

Does anybody have any new suggestions for fixing this issue on a Mac? My system specs are:

Mac OS X version 10.6.8
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2.5 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

If new patches exist, I'd love to hear about them. I'm not knowledegale about computers beyond being able to locate the files to replace with the patches when directions are provided... that's why I have a Mac and bought the Fallout games from GOG. I figured they'd sell them in a state I could handle!

I want to check out these avenues first before approaching GOG with a formal request for service.

Thanks all for your help!
Sorry, I know nothing as to how to resolve this issue, but reading this post waved a red flag infront of my face and now I don't have any interest in purchasing Fallout 2 from GOG since I too have a Mac with most of the same specs (same version atleast) and now I'm worried that the game will give me the same problem with really slow gameplay, etc. It's a shame, because Fallout 1 is such an excellent gem that I missed out on for the past 10+ years and many people claim Fallout 2 to be the staple of the series, which I am sad to say I may never get to play it on my Mac unless this issue gets addressed :-(
Search for "rhiyo directdraw fix configuration" thread. (I can't post a link for some reason)

Scroll down to Fallout 2, download the ddraw.dll file and replace your current one. I tried to make a thread but it won't let me for some reason, so here:

So...

I just purchased Fallout 2 off the sale, excited to play an old favorite on my macbook pro 13 inch 2011. I'm currently running Mac OSX 10.6.8 Like many of you trying to play the game on Mac, it ran horribly slow. Reading through these forums a bit somebody recommended replacing the ddraw.dll file deep within the Fallout 2 application package contents.

It worked great. Plays now just like I remembered it, lag free. There are a couple visual bugs I've noticed, but nothing major, nothing inhibiting gameplay or enjoyment.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Download this: can't post this link

Open up your Applications folder. Look for Fallout 2, right-click it, then hit 'show package contents'.
From here, go into "drive c", then "Program Files", then "GOG.com", then "Fallout 2". Rename ddraw.dll to something else (like ddraw_original.dll). Then copy the ddraw.dll you just downloaded from the link above to here.

That should do it. Let me know if this helped or not.

I found the fix from Rhiyo's post here, so credits go to him: NO LINKS WTF

The forum doesn't allow you on your first post to post links. Also, you are not being creative enough. Yes, I know it isn't click-able.
Haha that makes sense. Thanks.
I think the main problem that people are facing is that the game doesn't work well with the mouse acceleration that's in OSX. Slow movements barely register and fast ones are choppy.
So has anyone at GOG patched this yet for the Mac? I don't know if I can figure out the .dll ordeal since I'm not the most computer savvy and am not sure exactly where to look or what to do with the files. I just really want to play Fallout 2!

Cheers

Is this what you were talking about?

Another way to fix this (without using the DirectDraw fix) is to update the version of Wine Fallout 2 (and now Fallout 1) use.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Download Wineskin Winery (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php).
2) Unzip the file and open the app.
3) Under "Installed Engines", click the + icon. Next to it should be a - sign and the words "New Engine(s) Available"
4) Install the latest version (WS9Wine1.7.8 at time of writing).
5) Once the engine is installed, right-click (or control-click) the Fallout or Fallout 2 application and select Show Package Contents.
6) Open up the Wineskin app seen in the window.
7) Select Advanced, then click "Tools" near the top of the window.
8) Under the "Wrapper Tools" column, select "Change Engine Used".
9) In the small box with the search bar, select WS9Wine1.7.8 from the list under the search bar.
10) The wrapper will change to the selected engine.

Easy fix: in the wineskin app select Set Screen Options and set Wine control to automatic. Runs better than the Win version. *gone testing; fishing for vanilla crashes*
I'm on Linux rather than Mac, but still using wine, so possibly this might help folks coming in from google for the same issue (as I did). I ran into problems with really bad mouse lag and audio/video being choppy and stuttering despite my pc being able to handle games like Witcher 2 with no issues (and all this was prior to me adding any FO2 mods btw). For reference, I'm on Fedora 37 with an AMD FX-9590, GTX 970, and 32 GB RAM and should have ZERO issues with this kind of thing on that hardware... and yet here I am.

What ultimately fixed it for me was to:

1. Upgrade the included sfall ddraw.dll file to the latest version. The version from the GOG install was v3.2a (if you would like to confirm, run: exiftool ddraw.dll | grep 'Product Version'). This is from an open-source project and you can get the latest dll from https://sourceforge.net/projects/sfall/. You can also find all the newer ini settings documented on their github page. As of the time of my comment, my setup was working great with v4.3.7 and they had just released v4.3.8 yesterday.

2. I saw Highroc over on reddit mentioning that adding SingleCore=0 under the "[Misc]" section of ddraw.ini worked for him.. Did the same and it instantly solved all of my issues with the game. It now runs smooth as can be and I have since modded the ever living [expletive] out of it and it is still working great.
