Hello folks,

i finally managed it to get Fallout 2 to work on my Windows 8 tablet (Acer Iconia W700).
So far so good, sadly i can't start the game without a mouse plugged in. Even if i can use
the touch screen for in-game control. (Error: Failure initializing input devices ).

I can unplug the mouse after starting the game without problems. Does anyone have an idea
how to work around this? I tried tools like virtual mouse in the hope Fallout 2 would accept it as
input device but it seems that it needs at least one device controller of some kind (even gamepad)
to be attached.

I wish to reiterate this user's concern. I also experienced the same error while trying to run Fallout 1 and 2 on a tablet. Can some suggest a fix to this issue?

bump!! Same issue here. How can I start the game without a mouse attached? Asus t100 user here.

In ddraw.ini, in the [input] section, change BackgroundKeyboard to 1 and see if that fixes the error. If it doesn't change BackgroundMouse to 1 too.

Nope. The issue is the lack of a physical mouse. If you connect a mouse and start the game, it works.. but without aa mouse, which is the case when you are on the go, it gives this error, even with the tweaked .ini file.

Then you are out of luck. Since silencing the errors doesn't let the game run, you'll have to wait until someone edits or rewrites the engine. Bethesda "might" be the one to do it, if only to capitalize on the iOS market.

I'm trying to play Fallout 1 but I think this applies to it also. I tried to install the touchmouse application linked in a previous post, but I guess I didn't get it to work properly since the game still doesn't start without a mouse attached. I did as the asi loader and touchmouse installation guides tell, copied the files to the game folder

I also tried some touchmousepointer found from rpg codex and it works in the game, except right-clicking, which fortunately isn't very important in the game ;D

I'm using a Lenovo Miix 2 8", any tips on getting this working? It would be nice to play Fallout on the go.

I was struggling to get Fallout 2 working on my new HP Stream 7 the whole weekend and finally I've done it! I must note at this point that this is only for advanced users because it requires turning off the Secure Boot in UEFI and installing an unsigned driver (code.google.com/p/vmulti/). If you are still interested, you can download everything you need here:

Have you guys tried enabling "Turn on mouse keys" in Windows's Ease of Access control panel settings? This makes it so the computer emulates mouse movement with the numpad keys. As far as programs are concerned, they should think it's a real mouse attached to the PC. You can probably use that to at least get the game started on your Windows 8 Tablets, and then play using touch controls from there; however, I hope you manage your expectations. The experience will likely not be ideal.

Nope its not working :(

I recently bought a Surface Pro 4 and when I ever get a new PC I always install Fallout 2 first. I wanted to use the touch screen instead of the mouse. I got the touchmouse.dll working fine on a Windows 10 Surface. Its probably not the most efficient way, but it works.

Here is how:

1) Get the TouchMouse.dll AND TouchMouse.ini from https://github.com/Nomad1/touchmouse by following the link, then click on the 'build' folder and download both files.
2) Put the TouchMouse.dll AND TouchMouse.ini the in the 'C:\GOG Games\Fallout 2' directory or where ever you have Fallout 2 installed
3) Go to your 'C:\Windows\System32' folder
4) Find rundll.exe in that folder
5) Copy and paste rundll.exe into the 'C:\GOG Games\Fallout 2' directory or where ever you have Fallout 2 installed
6) On your desktop create a new shortcut
7) In the 'Type in the location of the item:' box put this (including the " marks):
"C:\GOG Games\Fallout 2\rundll32.exe" TouchMouse.dll,Start Fallout2.exe
8) Click Next, name the shortcut 'Fallout 2 Touch' so you know its the touchscreen enabled version
9) STOP! Don't run the game yet - If you have a High Res patch enabled, turn it off now otherwise you're going to be disappointed. This touch edition only works with the original 640x480 resolution. If you can figure out a way to configure a higher resolution in the TouchMouse.ini file you must be some kind of Hackerman.

PROTIPS IN GAME:

1) Use a soft stylus, its a lot easier to see what you're poking. You can also drag your finger around the screen to have direct control over the pointer. After playing for a couple of hours your screen will look like an army of snails attacked. Hence why I recommend a soft stylus.
2) Get use to double-tapping things on screen in game. The first tap centres the mouse the second tap will 'click'.
3) Two finger tap will change the pointer to the 'right click' and a single tap will bring back the regular pointer.
4) You'll need your Surface keyboard attached for things like character creation so you can type in a name, but that's about it.

Can you not just talk to the tablet or does it not have voice regognition?

That was such a funny misspelling that I am leaving it in.

I took a quick look into the source code. And the problem, most probably, is not a screen resolution but the fact that HiRes patch and touchmouse.dll tamper with the same part of Fallout engine. It would be wise to contact Mash via NMA forums (nma-fallout.com/forums/fallout-general-modding.18) and politely ask to provide compatibility. Or even to integrate touchmouse.dll code into the patch if license allows.

If you really have Fallout on each of your IBM-compatibles there is an easy alternative. Just generate your character on your desktop/laptop, save as GCD file and transfer it to the tablet. Fallout is rather traditional RPG and is capable of tradinitional way of things in this aspect. )
