Thank you Petrell, I did go to Killap as you suggested and downloaded two files, On, the unofficiial patch, and the restoration patch. Now, I'm a bit confused, though.
The link above with the two recommended patches is now working. So I went there and also downloaded the high resolution patch. My delimma is whether to install all three, or just the 'unofficial' patch and the high resolution one.
I don't mind that I will have to start over, even though I've already done the SF trek and got the good armor. It has continued to bug me that I didn't get the melee training I should have before I left 'home'. And since I've seen the huge list of bugs this game has I definitely want to use the patches.
I have the K9 companion, and Sulik. But let me ask you something. Are companions really necessary? I played Fallout 3 without one till I got ... oh heck, what's his name, Fawkes? and of course he was awesome, but that was toward the end of the game. I tend to be a loner and don't like being responsible for the health and equipment of a "cast of characters."
Edit: I went ahead and instatlled the three patches I downloaded, So far, I don't notice a lot of difference in appearance. I elected to start the game over. The first thing I noticed was that I seemed to be more skilled in the original Trial experience. As I did the first time, I stole the key from the dude blocking the last door with no problem. This time, I was able to get both the melee upgrade and the spear upgreade, so that was new. So far, so good., time will tell.
