Hello everybody,

I have been playing Fallout 1, doing a playthrough "as blind as possible", only occasionally relying on walkthroughs.
I have managed to save my Vault, and have been sent on a mission to investigate the mutants of Necropolis. Although I had easily killed some supermutants while looking for the water chip, the ones I find there now seem to be more dangerous and manage to kill me or Ian or Dogmeat quite easily.
So I have decided to do some questing. I have tried to kill the Deathclaws for the Gunrunners in Adytum and mostly manage to kill the sons but the Mother regularly makes short work of me. Although I have upgraded my armor (I have one of those green armors that also policemen wear), I can't seem to survive neither the aforementioned Supermutants, nor Mother Deathclaw, nor Decker in the Hub (other open quest I had).
I am currently level 9, I'm carrying a shotgun (not combat shotgun because my ST is 4) and an alien blaster I randomly found by a wrecked UFO. The shotgun is not particularly powerful but with Small guns at around 50% it is quite accurate. The blaster is devastating but I am around 25% in energy weapons.
Does it make sense to walk around the desert, perhaps with a caravan, looking for enemies to level up? Are there any safer quests I am missing? Am I missing some good weapons that I can use despite my low strength? Should I just buy all the stimpaks I can find and "bruteforce" my enemies?

Thank you to whoever answers. I'm in love with this game and it is very frustrating to be unable to see more of it :)

You might want to search for the Brotherhood of Steel for an armor upgrade.

As said above, try to become a member of the Brotherhood of Steel. It'll help you get the most powerful armor that's available in the game. During the quest that will allow you to enter BoS bunker, you'll also have an occasion to acquire the best energy weapon. It's also possible to upgrade both the armor and energy weapon in Adytum. With both you should be able to beat the super mutants (if you have high enough Energy Weapons skill that is). You can also finish the game without killing any of the super mutants, but I don't know if you want spoilers on how to do it. :)

This is the best place to grind, IMHO. Kill the deathclaws on the streets, retreat without going down to the nest. When you come back, deathclaws should respawn (I don't remember if you have to wait some time or if it's instantaneous - it's been a while since I played the game). Rinse and repeat. Sniping worked the best for me.

For the deathclaws, if you have good enough weapons skill, aim for the legs. That way they're much slower, then you should be able to just back off and pick them off (or they may even try to run, in which case you should be able to chase them easily enough).

I'd suggest getting your small guns skill much higher if you want to do that with any reasonable chance of success though - I usually have mine beyond 100%.

Or you could do as others suggest and invest in energy weapons instead.

I would definitely take other's advice and look for entry into the Brotherhood of Steel - it's definitely worth it for many reasons, chief of which is their armor.

As for Decker, I recall that the mission to take him down usually has the quest giver accompany you if I'm not mistaken, so it should be possible to just ensure you stay out of the way and let them deal with him.

Be aware that you can also use weapons which require more than 4 strength, you only get a -20 skill penalty to per missing strength point.
Leveling up will increase your combat power a lot if you put level up skill points into energy weapon skills, it's not worth spending skill points for any other combat skill.
You have plenty of time left in the game so you can afford exploring, with or without caravan, finding new areas is a good thing.

Ok, I have solved my problem by applying a mixture of your solutions. Here's what have I done in case someone finds themselves in a similar situation in their playthrough and stumbles upon this thread:

- I have taken a lot of contracts from the caravan companies to make money and some exp
- I have met a guy called Tycho in a bar in Junktown who proved a very good ally
- I have killed the deathclaws multiple times and leveled up a couple times
- With the money from the caravans I got an assault rifle and a combat armor for myself and plenty of ammunition for my companions from the Gun Runners, plus a lot of stimpaks from people around Adytum
- Faced and killed Mother Deathclaw at the first try
- I have found out that because I had left Boneyard the head of the Blades had died (it's a known bug); I therefore had to face the Regulators myself (thankfully I met a girl at the Adytum library who joined my party), resulting in a gigantic shoot-out where most of the inhabitants of the town died.
- With a party of 5 people (dog included) I easily wiped out any opposition I came across, and even Decker was no match for us (Tycho however fell in the gunfight).
- Went to the Brotherhood and managed to become an Initiate (too bad the power armour I managed to repair is EIGHTYFIVE pounds and it would eat too much of my storage space; but they did give me an enhanced power armor which is quite useful). From there I managed to continue the main plot.

Thanks to everyone who helped!
Like one of the other users said, I would definitely go to the brotherhood and get the upgrade.
