1 - Is there any way to force allies to wear better armor or use better weapons? (I know you can replenish their ammo and stimpaks ia barter but giving them better armor doesn't seem to change their appearance, so I don't know if it does anything. I have the NPC mod installed per the sticky).

2 - How to repair the water pump in Necropolis? I've gotten the "junk" from the sewer and attempted to use it on the water pump but nothing works. Using the repair skill doesn't work either. Probably a nonissue since the mutants have invaded already but I wanted to see it completed anyway.

I don't know about the armor part, but you can give them better weapons. To repair the water pump click on the skills button, then the repair button and when you get that little yellow cross hair click on the water pump. Tip have a tool in your inventory slot (the slot you place stim packs and weapons) it'll give you a boost to you repair skill.

Unfortunately Companions will not equip new armour without the use of one of the fan made mods in the sticky (I cant give any more info as I've never used them).

As the above poster mentioned, you can give your companions better weapons, but each companion can only use specific types of weapon (Ian will only use handguns, Knives and SMGs for example, and some larger handguns like the Deser Eagle still wont work due to sprite limitations).

Also you dont need to barter with them, you can also use your steal skill with no penalties on companions, allowing you to give and take any items without trying to give/take items of a similar value in return.

Finally, I'm currently playing through the game again myself, and did the water pump part myself last night (Also after the mutant invasion was over), it took me a few atempts, the pump seems a bit finicky about where you click it, the first few times I tried to repair it, I got a message saying that did nothing (Not that I failed), and on the third time (Clicking the bottom left part it worked, givivng me my xp reward).

He says he has the NPC Mod installed. I think his main issue on the matter of armor is that there aren't differently armored sprites for the NPCs in Fallout 1 under the fan-made NPC Mod. True?
That's as I understand it. Truth be told, I've never used the NPC Mod. I should try it some time. Especially anything that keeps the darn dog alive.
Also, you don't want to give Ian a SMG.
Ah sorry I'd just gotten out of bed when I posted, and must have missed that.
Thanks to all who replied. Beat the game today finally, never did fix the pump. :) I liked it but was surprised at the number of bugs I ran into (mainly with quests getting broken) and by how much content you could easily skip and still "win" the game. I tried to do everything but probably missed at least some plot threads. I'm hoping Fallout 2 has some interface improvements - by the time I got done I was really sick of scrolling the one-column inventory over and over again.

There were a couple of these. What springs to mind? One I long thought was broken, I simply hadn't figured out the threads. (And there was a related dialogue glitch, mind you, but nothing that prevented completion.)

Incredibly deliberate, much the same as there being at least three ways to beat The Master.

If you're like me, you'll play this repeatedly over the years and still catch subtleties and details a decade later. Did you ever catch the Water Thief in your home vault? Had to look that one up.

There are mild improvements in that regard between 1 and 2, but I recommend getting the scrollwheel mod so that the games deal better with the mouse's extra features. It'll still be one column. At least it won't be quite as tedious, though.
I just started up Fallout2 with the recommended mods (minus the restoration project since I"m going for an improved vanilla experience) and it runs a million times better, at higher resolutions, than Fallout 1 did. I played F1 at 1024x768 with the high rez mod and it still ran choppy even on a very modern computer. Weird cause it seems like the high rez mod for F2 is the same mod. Thanks for all the help
