Title says all, I recently downloaded Fallout 1, it was running perfectly, I didn't install any new patches, just played it like it came.. But I restarted it once, by unplugging my computer, and now it will never go farther then the loading screen.. I've uninstalled it, reinstalled it, NOTHING! Any help people?

You restarted it "by unplugging the computer"???? Did you unceremoniously yank the power cord or what?
What OS are you running on the PC?

Well, no, the computer just totally jammed, and there was no other way to turn it off, so. I just pulled the power cord, and I'm running Windows XP.. If that is what you mean.
Yes, that's what I meant :-)
Run a scandisk on your C: drive to make sure that the filesystem is still sane, and also try disabling any antivirus products temporarily to see if that makes any difference.
I disabled the antivirus after the problem, (norton) and so I decided to get rid of it in total, and go with AVG, and still.. Nothing happened, how would I run a scandisk? I'm stupid D:
No worries. Click on "My Computer", Right click on your C: drive and select "properties" from the menu that pops up, select "tools" and lastly "check now" under error-check.
It may tell you that it cannot run until you restart the PC, which you then accept.

Okay, thanks. I'll try that!
Okay, I just restarted my computer, its checking it right now..
Triple edit, Okay, It just finished, it says there was nothing wrong with the computer.. Any other suggestions? thanks
Anybody else help?

A couple more things:
When it freezes, does it completely lock up the PC, or can you ALT-TAB to another window/program?
Have you tried waiting a while to see if any error eventually pops up?
When re-installing the game, make sure that *everything* is correctly uninstalled before installing again. (folder usually under c:\program files\gog.com\fallout).
You mentioned removing Norton antivirus in favour of AVG, may i recommmend that you download and run this:

in order to make sure that Norton has been complletely wiped off the machine.
Try running it in Win 95 or 98 compatibility mode

Good point dogeddie, had completely forgotten about that :P
Couple of extra things you could try if none of the suggestions so far work.
You could try a system restore back at a point before your first installation.
Run Defrag (should do this at least once a month anyways) - You can find Defrag in XP under : Start>> Accessories>> system tools >> defragment
Clean out all your history files, temp files, IE cache, cookies. (this isnt game problem specific, Im just relaying standard "cleanout" procedures when your computer has crashed to a halt and you had to do a hard reset.)
Try, when prompted at Install, to install to a different location (different drive if you have more than one or partitions on your main drive)
Check the "uninstall" status of the game > Start>>control panel >> add remove programs. ALWAYS use this to uninstall your programs rather than the uninstallers provided by games or Apps.
Hope something works for you, its a great game :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH! It works! I know this post is 9 years old but I'm glad I stumbled upon it. Completely forgot to try 95/98 compat mode.

Yet you were still dumb enough to necro it with a "me too" post? Holy shit!
