Ok, I followed the instructions in the sticky for installing the Hi-Res patch to the letter. Now, supposedly it should add an Options button to the main menu. It isn't there.
This question / problem has been solved by Antimateriaimage

At the main menu click Options, above Combat Messages there should be a button that says "Scan" click on that and you'll be able to change the resolution in there. Then restart and enjoy.

Ok, I got that button to appear, but it crashed when I try and change the resolution.

Yeah.. it didn't also show me any resolutions and crashed if I pushed the arrow up or down. So I edited the ini-file what that res-patch creates. And then it worked fine.

Edit: f1_res.ini to be exact. I put 800x600 resolution if I put higher the game character seems too small and also text is a bit too small. And it let me change to the 16 bit color-mode.

I got it working. Had to run it in 8 bit instead of 16 bit.
