any time I convince the master to kill himself as i leave everything else is still attacking me... am i doing something wrong or do i just have to make a b-line to the exit and hope i don't get killed. sorry if i'm not posting this in the right place.

There is another way:
You can kill him in nuclear blast without talking to him.

If you go to Morpheus in the tower and ask for an audience with the Master, he will take you to him directly. Then, when you're leaving, nobody will attack you.

No, the mutants and children will still attack you. You can run like crap and maybe survive, but the easier thing to do is put on one of the children's robes. then everyone leaves you alone.

You can also use stealth unit immediately after talking to him. I think chances for you to get attack are lowered thanks to this. And after escaping to a higher level you can bluff your way out.
And no - there is nothing wrong with this. It's just they way it's supposed to be. You convinced only the Master, but his minions don't give a damn about it. :P
