First of all I just want to say hi as I'm new to the forums and to GOG, which I think is an absolute awesome directory of great games and people.

My issue is that the cinematics (intro, etc.) is slightly blurred. I have the 1.2 patch and the high resolution patch installed with the ddraw.dll removed, so I'm squared away there. Interestingly enough even setting the res back to 640 x 480 still produces blur. Anyone have this issue as well, or know how to remedy the situation? Thanks in advance, and Its great to be here!

I can't help you unfortunately, and I haven't encountered the problem myself yet, but welcome!
Was Fallout the first GOG you bought?
Thanks for posting anyway though =D Yep first game I've bought here, and thank you for the welcome!
Yeah no problem! It's always fun talking to new GOG users, and gamers in general. Fallout seems to be most common first GOG people buy. According to the bestseller list, it's at the top, if you ignore the free games.

How did you find out about GOG, anyway?
Hmm, that's a good question =P I cant recall for sure, but I think it was through a gaming website like IGN or Gamespot a long while ago (could be wrong tho, as its been so long), and I just recently decided to purchase Fallout 1 and eventually 2, as Ive been anxious to see the Fallout series' origins. Fallout New Vegas got me thinking about it again and while taking a break from it, I figured Id try the old ones, and here I am =D
Hi, welcome to GOG! My first thought was, well, it's an old game, videos ARE blurred. :) It's like I remember playing Rebel Assault II back in the day with awesome quality razor sharp HD graphics, but now we all know it was 15 fps low resolution pre-rendered blocky videos chained together. But it didn't seem to bother me on my 15" screen.

Can you post a screenshot so we can see what the problem is?
Thanks for posting Darth! Yeah you are right, however before installing the hi res patch, the in game movies were actually clear. Here's a screenshot of the intro text blurred - I posted the fallout logo instead of farther into the intro, due to the fact that its easier to indeed see the blur outright. Its not too big of a deal, and I don't want to look like I'm complaining for nothing, but I just figured Id ask since I did notice the change. Interestingly enough, If i uninstall the high res patch, It all becomes clear again, but hopefully I can use it and clear up the problem.

Ahh, do you mean it's blocky, pixelated? I think the hi-res patch stretches the video to your monitor's native resolution with no filtering, just making each pixel 2x/3x bigger. When you run the original version, your monitor itself scales the low resolution source with proper filtering, hence it probably looks better for videos.

I haven't updated my sfall in a while, I'm not sure how to fix this, you can try looking into the config file if you see anything obvious about filters, scaling, rendering mode, that sort of stuff, and just experiment with it, see if you can make it look better. Make sure you back up the original version of the config first.
Ah that's something else I forgot to mention. The only config file I see is the f1_res file that I believe was added with the hi res patch. For some reason any change I make in that file is not being read. For example there's an option in there to keep the movies at the standard 420 x 380, but the change wont stick. Is there another config file I should have, or that I'm not seeing?
By the way darth thanks for working through this with me bro, I appreciate it!

Ah, sorry for all the trouble! Tried randomly running the program as administrator and that fixed the ini file read issue, so now its all good. Thanks for all the help guys =D On another note, any idea what some ideal panel width and height changes would be for a res of
1920 x 1080? What I mean by panels, is the file inside the "f1_res" folder which allows you to change the size of the interface bar, inventory, map, character screen, etc to match your expanded resolution. If anyone has fiddled with this and found good settings let me know =)

No problem, I'm glad you found the right setting.

The reason why you needed to run as administrator is because the game was installed in the "C:\Program Files" folder (or "C:\Program Files (x86)" for 64 bit systems). As of Windows Vista onwards, installing old games in there is not recommended, as it is a virtualized folder. Any changes under the program files folder by a program is saved in a different folder, only seen by the currently logged in user (effectively giving multi-user support for applications that weren't designed for it). It might also be a problem if you want to find your savegames to back up, instead of "C:\Program Files\Fallout" they'll be in "C:\Documents and Settings\user\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Fallout" or similar.

There are two ways around it, either run as admin (as you did), which bypasses the above, or install the game in a non-protected folder, like "C:\Games\Fallout".

Oh that's cool! I think I found GOG by searching for websites similar to Steam, but didn't actually buy anything immediately because it was about the same time as the Steam Holiday Sale last year, which captured my attention more than GOG's sale. I don't think that will be happening this year though!

You can also disable UAC, which will fix this problem (and many others) quite effectively.
