***Possible Spoilers Ahead***
Well, I talked to Killian in Junktown and then I went up to the 'crashhouse' area where I met up with some of the Skulz gang. I said something negative about one of their members and they all took after me and my partner Ian. We killed them all. From then on *everyone* wants to kill me. I went back to Killian's place and even *he* wants to kill me. It doesn't make sense.
I went online to the FAQ and it tells me I should go to the Casino right after Killian... Do I really have to do things in such a strict order? Why does everyone want to kill me for a fight I really didn't start? And why does Killian want to kill me? We got along at first and I thought he didn't even like the Skulz. So, I don't want to play the game with the FAQ at my side (that's no fun), but I just spent a hour fighting off all these people for just making a perjorative comment about someone, and I feel like I've ruined my chances of completing the game... Again, I didn't start the fight. They started shooting at me just for saying something negative about one of the members. Is the game really this picky? What gives?
Thanks.

This question / problem has been solved by JudasIscariotimage
Here's the thing about Fallout: even though it is mostly lawless as all hell, there are people like Killian in there who try their damnedest to maintain some form of law and order. Therefore, if you kill Gizmo and/or the Skullz *without* his express approval you are going to have a very hard time afterwards.
In both cases you have to provide some sort of evidence to Killian that the wrongdoers are doing something wrong. Just like in real life, you can go shooting your gun off at perceived drug dealers and pimps and all that but if you have no sure evidence you will get hunted by police and civilians alike.
So, to summarize, go to Killian first before doing ANYTHING. Also, if you interact with the Skullz, kiss their butt whatever you have to do to get out of the situation if you are trying to play by the law.

OK, I will try what you suggested. The problem is, that the story/plot seems so touchy that even things that are inadvertent seem a no-no. For example, when I first met Killian and one of Gizmo's men came in and started firing at him, then my own ally, Ian, started firing at Killian (no reason). And then a whole fight ensued of course, I had to time it so that I was by the door when talking to Killian so that when the fighting started I could go outside quickly (Ian followed) so as not to be part of the fight. Very picky indeed. Don't get me wrong, I like games where I have a lot of room to explore and do what I like (as long as I don't pick fights for no reason). I thought that was what Fallout was all about. I loved the Gothic series (well, 1 and 2 at least), where this was certainly possible. But, in this instance I didn't even start the fight... Well, enough people love this game obviously, and I was having fun with it until now, so I guess I'll perservere. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep trying. :)

I think a lot of those mishaps are due to engine limitations and the basic scripting that they had back then. Like they say "save early save often and in multiple slots".
save early, save often.
