I downloaded a character planner for both games and am using them to try to figure out how to best spend my points. In past playthroughs, I found that I have more points than I really need, especially in the first game since the cost to raise a skill never rises more than 1 per point.
According to what I've learned from websites, other players, and my own experience with the planners, I've decided to:
-Raise Lockpick to about 80% so that I can use the lockpick sets and electronic lockpicks to open any door on the first try.
-Raise Sneak to 120% for assassination purposes. Also useful for melee characters who need to get into range to attack.
-If Speech is tagged, up to 120% in the first game and 175% in the second game to pass the toughest speech checks on the first try.
-All leftover points into my primary combat skills to get as much accuracy and combat effectiveness against enemies with the highest armor class, best accuracy for targeted shots to the eyes from max range.
I've also discovered that using the Tag perk on a skill where you've spent a lot of points into effectively doubles the value! This is better down in Fallout 2 due to the higher level cap as I may need those precious perk slots for others in the first game. Using Tag on a skill is better done on combat skills I've invested heavily into that aren't already tagged, this can be good for when I need to switch to either Energy Weapons or Big Guns as a ranged shooter, or Unarmed if going melee (after getting all the bonuses to training it from other npcs).
Some players, from what I read, have even suggested investing into Throwing, but depending on my build, I may not even be able to afford to put any points into the skill.
Of course, players are divided over how high exactly should you raise a skill. In previous playthroughs with a sniper character in the first game, I've maxed both Small Guns and Energy Weapons at 200%, but I think this might be overkill when those points could be better spent elsewhere.
What are the recommendations for each skill and how high they should be raised in both games, depending on whether I'm going ranged or melee, or if I'm using Fast Shot or targeted shots?
