1. How do I get four or even five guys in a unit? I want to get the highest quality spearman out asap and upgrade them when research and city buildings allow.
2. What determines how many units can be in the same army? I try and get my spearman out but there are circles with X preventing me from adding them to the hero's group.

1.
You get +1 Grouping Size (up to 6) if you research Cooperation (4-Group), Logistics (5-Squad), and Company (6-Company). You need to use the Upgrade Button found bottom left to upgrade an already trained unit. Your new units should automatically train using the largest size, but you can select a smaller size at the top of the train menu.

2.
You get +1 Army Size (up to 9) if you research Drills, Economics, Siege Weapons, War Colleges. Each of these will remove one of the circled X automatically.
