I already have a retail disc version of the game so I'm probably not gonna buy the game just to find out, but I was wondering what exactly that even is? Anyone know?

As far as I remember you have these bonuses in the game. When you collect enough of them you unlock stuff in the extra's menu. When you use the in game bonus unlock it just unlocks all those.

I believe the bonus unlocks are making-of videos. You usually had to play through the game at least once to unlock that content but the GOG version comes with that stuff available right away. It's convenient for people like me who finished the game long ago and don't want to have to finish it again to watch the videos.
Not a cheat code at all - just a convenience. I would advise against watching the videos before finishing the game, though. You don't want to spoil the ending to this game's... intelligent... story.

You really should buy this game on gog, it's DRM-free and uncensored. Your version might be censored depending on the region.
