I've seen a few threads asking how to get the latest experimental version of Factorio, and it's not explained clearly anywhere. So here is a quick guide on how to get the latest updates for Factorio.

1. Go to 'My Account>Games>Factorio>More' & select 'Serial Keys'.
2. Copy your serial Key.
3. Go to Factorio.com & make an account (or login if you have one already). Click on your username in the top right. Then click on 'Upgrade' & enter your serial key.
4.Launch Factorio and go to 'Options>Other' ensure that both 'Check for updates' & 'Enable experimental updates are checked.
5.Login using the same username & password you used of Factorio.com.
6.Next time you run the game, it'll ask you if you want to update (if there are new updates avaliable), click 'Update Now'. It might take a while, but afterwards, Factorio will have updated itself.

If you're using Galaxy, see gourgouilloult's post below for step 7.

If I may add a 7: once the latest version you've upgraded to through the game itself hits GOG, just run a "check / repair" from the game page in Galaxy. Otherwise Galaxy will try to upgrade your game, realize it's not installed as it's supposed to (since you upgraded earlier from within the game), then complain and fail to "upgrade" and, quite possibly, not even allow you to launch it.

The "check/repair" step will just allow Galaxy to verify that your files are already in line with the new version and it'll settle to leave everything as is, just checking another box under "currently installed version" ;-)

Alternatively, you can also prevent Galaxy from trying to upgrade the game at all, but you might not get some new stuff along the road, like e.g. achievements, if they are some day added to the game in Galaxy.

PS: this should get a sticky ^^

Thank you. This post was very helpful.
Is this guide still needed? At least in galaxy, I can just activate beta channels and it will give me... I'm new to this game so I don't know what to expect inside, but the version numbers and uploaded date look quite recent (see attachment).

It's not needed for updates, but a factorio.com account is required for multiplayer (steps 1,2,3,5)

Hmm right now that does not work for me. GOG Galaxy always resets the version to the version of the store. I guess I disable auto update in gog then.

I'm not absolutely sure I understand what your situation was. If I were to take a guess, I'd venture that maybe you had auto-update in the game, but not "experimental updates" in Galaxy? Anyhoo, since 1.0 has been released, there's gonna be a bit of time before the next experimental release (maybe!)

Also, I'd like to clarify: the steps above applied to the first version of GOG Galaxy. Some slight variations might occur in Galaxy 2. I haven't had particular issues, however I wasn't discovering the "factorio account on wube's website" stuff — which I have forgotten _all_ about since ^^'

Nevertheless, I confirm that I had a gog-0.17 installed, auto-updated (ie in-game) to 0.18, and Galaxy 2 tried to upgrade to 1.0 but that failed after donwloading ~1GB. I caught it (during third pass  ) launched a check/repair instead et voila : all set with a ~250MB download.

Now if you'll excuse me… that base won't expand itself! X-)
Is there going to be an update channel to keep current with the switch console version, like there is on steam?
@GOG. You guys do not provide patches (at last at the moment) so in order to update from 2.07 to 2.10 I had to download new installers. Yep, I'm logged in on Factorio website and I used to update just from the game.

1. You could provide patches.
2. Should I do something to enable ingame updates after buying Space Age?

It looks like the GOG version of Factorio Space Age _does_ have in-game updates.

Here's what I did to get this to work.

1 - Bought Factorio and install factorio.
2 - Bought and installed the Space Age expansion.
3 - Followed the instructions in the first post in this thread, making sure at step 3 to _also_ input the serial number for the Space Age expansion that I got from GOG in to the "input upgrade code" field on my profile page on the factorio.com website.

After doing that I quit the game and restarted it and after loading all the mods asked me if you want to update to the latest version... and this way I was able to update from Factorio 2.0.7 to Factorio 2.0.16 (_without_ having the download the latest Space Age expansion).
