I remember playing this game a couple years ago and I was wondering if this bug is still around, or if it has been fixed.

Basically what happens is that in Central Europe, there is at least one invisible mountain in the mountain range between Czechoslovakia and Germany. It is super annoying. You fly home after successfully delivering democracy to those commies, you can almost see the German airport where you're supposed to land, and suddenly BAM. Apparently you crashed into a mountain. But there was no mountain anywhere to be seen (polygon missing a texture?).

Is there someone who can test/confirm this? I'm considering buying the game, but only if this is fixed.

Thanks
Maybe the commies secretely developed mountain cloaking technology. :^D

But in all seriousness I don't know.
If the bug wasn't patched when this game was relatively new it probably still is in the game.
You know, that is what happens to imperialist air pirates, when our PVO is unable to catch their sneaky planes... ;-)

Seriously, though.
Mountain range surrounding Bohemia is hugely oveblown in all MPS games maps (ie. F-19/F-15II and F-117A - I measured it once in old F-19 and I was amazed about the heights of those - never knew we had "Alps" in Bohemia) and AFAIR, I always avoided it for this very reason and went south of them or (preferably) north of those and I always crossed Bohemia in north - south direction, if I really had to.
MPS maps of Central Europe are buggy as hell, ranging from misspels up to completely wrong town locations (and I am under no delusion, that other areas are better in this regard).

There is another reason for going around and not through - you have to fly pretty high and this means radar exposure and this means trouble, espcially, if the entire Warsaw pact is on alert due to your actions.

I am also Czech so all what you have said is exactly what bothers me too. Central Europe is my favorite map and I'd love to play it excessively, but not with this bug. I was also amazed at the unreal height of the mountains and exactly as you write, I tried to avoid them as much as I could. And here's the problem. I'm going PARALLEL to the mountain range (basically crossing from Southern Poland to Germany), there closest foot of the mountain is three miles away from me...and still I somehow "crash". Very sad...
Hey guys,

I had a similar issue years ago, and while I can't remember if the following solution fixed it in the end, it's worth a shot.

GOG's version of this game is 473.03, and it turns out there's a 473.04, which can only be found in The Patches Scrolls. It modifies VGAME.EXE, which is the flight simulator portion of the game. Reading an old post of mine over at the DOSBox forums, the patch seemed to fix the issue I was having, but to be honest I don't think I played extensively enough to fully test the matter.

If anyone's interested, go ahead, try it out and report your experience.

Cheers!

Excellent, will czech it out. Thank you!
For what it's worth I've played the map a lot, without issues. I happily fly through the corridor between two mountain ranges and it works fine every time - helpful way to avoid detection.

My issue with the sim is its stability. At least on my machine. Simply put, you can't fly a long mission without fearing a crash. Once you get past your baseline 1,000 fuel, if you've been successful taking out multiple targets (say 10+), the sim slowly starts to fall apart. Phantom planes, invisible mountains, then radar lines on the map that extend out into the cockpit, and finally crash. It's an additional, unwanted obstacle to posting really high scores!
