This is first time im really disappointed with gog version of classic old game.

Only reason i bought this GOG version, while i already have original CD which is extremely hard to launch without problems, was i believed all problems were fixed by GOG.

And this is what i got. I just cant run it at all. I will probably ask for refund!

Update:

After testing this on brand new PC with clean installation of Windows 10 i ended with this error too.
That looks like GOG version is pretty messed up!

So, im expecting some new version of GOG's installer soon or refund.
Never forget to try compatibility mode for games that are made for older operating systems.
That's what it exists for.
Only in very few cases GOG versions differ from the original.

I dont think so. I can write here a whole list of my original CDs (flopies) which doesnt work at all (even with help of PCgamingwiki) but mysteriously works from GOG installer. Then why we have GOG in here if they offer just standard versions of broken oldies? It doesnt make a sense. GOG appeared here years back with classic games which was hard to find, to buy or to play on modern hardware. I buy on GOG only games which; arent on steam or are impossible to run and play even with tips of sites like pcgamingwiki.

In case of Expendable, I have an original CD for many years, it used to run fine on 98/XP, but maximum I was able to do in Win7 and 10 was got into main menu after many experiments, play no way. That was a reason why I bought it, especialy when price was under 1€, here and was surprised that doesnt start at all, epic fail, even triple fail, 3 totaly different PCs, none able to run that, one of them was brand new freshly installed win10. Its not a standard I remember from begginings of GOG shop. Games were old and 100% runnable on modern PCs, but today?... Expendable truly isnt only problematic title from their shop.

btw, you said me just try compatibility?
Oh man. Compatibilities are just a top of pyramid from things you can try on PC when something old doesnt start, but of course chance that they can really help in specific case is like a 1:10000 at best.

Actualy, I found a way how to play in windows 10 after refund. I dont know if this can help in W11.
Not a stable way, but it works somehow. Or at least my oldest machine based on Corei5 3570k processor can run it now, but i guess it can work with modern hardware too, cause issues were same on every tried machine.

Game acts very oddly, first thing you can notice is crazily high use of CPU and fact that sound is choppy with noises, this leads usualy to fast crash during loading or worse, complete stuck of windows. I tried all weird stuff.

-Compatibility windows modes are useless, no effect.
-run as an administrator, useless.
-unplug of all gamepads before start of game as pcgamingwiki recommends, had no effect, useless tip.
-Running game with -nocputest parameter as recommended on pcgamingwiki has also no effect at all.
-And btw, using of patch which should fix water effects from same site is useless too, that doesnt fix anything and water looks exactly same as before patching so doubt this even works with GOG version.

But I 100% recommend to install last version of dgVoodoo into game's directory and in dgVoodoo settings set DirectX mode resolution to 2x or 3x resolution mode and asntialiasing to "controlled by app", you need to avoid of using specific higher resolutions. With no dgVoodoo I couldnt start game at all, just got wierd error mesage.

After many tries I noticed that first level can be really loaded and played if you set resolution in game's setup (expendable.exe) to resolutions which used to be actualy uses in 1999 like 640x480 or 800x600. In short, lower resolution = more stable Expandable. With 1080p you can actualy run game too, but it crashing much more often and whats more annoying with higher resolutions sound becomes broken with lot of noises, no matter which sound mode you set in game setup, so i recommend using 720p max, better is 800x600. Game can sometimes crash during loading, but it happens rarely with low resolutions.

Another tip, turning ingame options 3D sound on usualy leads to issue when you can hear only your steps and your shooting, nothing else and doesnt matter which sound provider you set or if you set only stereo more. So, better leave it off. I found no solution for this yet.

Its a shame that GOG is selling this version with no warning.
