I completed the first island. The game crashed about 20 times, but it saves after every "day" so most of the time I lost only a few minutes of game play. One time I got an error message and the game seems to continue, but I loaded an older save game (which does not report any error on loading). When I'm ready to sail to the next land, I saved and closed the game. Next day I wanted to continue, but the game crashed most of the time after showing the video or the next loading screen without any error message. I walked around the first island before going on board and managed it to reach the next land. I saved after entering the first village but the game crashed every time when loading that save game with an error message. I uninstalled the game, deleted everything except the save game folder and installed again - didn't change anything.

Game version 1.6.5, downloaded 10/2014, using german language, running on Windows 7 (32 bit), 1280x1024, Nvidia GF440 with recent drivvers.

Any more ideas?

Crashing got better for some players, after reducing texture quality to half.
I reduced the graphic settings to minimum and switched to windowed mode (1024x768). The game runs for a few in-game-days, but after a fight in the ruins south of the first village it has crashed without error message.

All saved games after reaching the main land (using the ship) display an error message on loading (error #0001, execption while loading, see attachment). I can play, but after some time the game stops working (with/without an error message). Win 7 / 32bit with 4 GB RAM, closed any apps before starting the game.

I'll put the game aside for some time, hoping for a new patch.

According to the screenshot, you get an "Out of Memory Exception". I know that the game sometimes has issues running out of memory (bad optimization imo), so that may be the case here as well. The question is why? 4GB RAM means, you've got 2GB available for applications (user RAM) and 2GB for your system (system RAM). Make sure, that the 2GB user RAM are as free as possible, by closing all other applications and unneeded processes like you did. Check the Windows Task Manager for processes using a lot of RAM, maybe there's one you've missed.
Have you changed your Windows pagefile settings?

If you still run out of user RAM, you can shift the 50-50 barrier between system and user RAM, to 3GB user RAM and 1GB system RAM (but I'd switch it back after you've completed the game, because this non-standard setting can cause problems in other situations, like Windows updates or generally with drivers).

To enable the 3GB switch:
- Right-click the Command Prompt icon (German "Eingabeaufforderung") in the Accessories program group (German "Zubehör") of the Start menu and select "Run as Administrator"
- Type in this command an press Enter:
bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072
- Reboot the computer

To disable the 3GB switch:
- Again, run the Command Prompt ('Eingabeaufforderung") as an Administrator
- Now type in this command an press Enter:
bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa
- Reboot the computer

As you're using a 32 bit Windows a single process can't use more than 2 GB memory. Maybe the game tries to do so and crashes. That would be a bug. Without a patch, the only easy thing you could do in this case is reducing the game's memory usage, by tweaking the game settings so, that it uses less resources.
Maybe I try the 3GB switch, but I doubt it will help. "Expeditions: Conquistador" is a 32 bit application (afaik) and I don't think it can/should use more than 2 GB of RAM. Even running Windows 7 / 64bit would not offer more memory to 32 bit processes (normal apps, not linked with /LARGEADDRESSAWARE), see "stackoverflow.com" (link below). The game was fun and interesting and I didn't mind the crashes (it had frequent autosaves), but atm it's unplayable for me and I don't want to start all over until there's a new patch.

I play a lot of games, most of them from GOG and had no problems with other games, I think my PC works fine and this is a problem of "Expeditions: Conquistador".

Posting links not possible for me, modified version:

Yes, I know the limits of 32 bit processes, like I said at the end of my former post ;-) The point is, when your user RAM doesn't offer full 2GB free space you might run into this Out Of Memory bug, which I suspect as well to be a flaw of the game and not of your machine. Increasing it to 3GB might help, or not. Just because the game throws an OutOf Memory error, doesn't mean that this is actually true. The cause of the crashes, can still be anything.
I changed the user space to 3 GB and was able to complete the game (with very few crashes). I went back to 2 GB, because some other programs started to show graphic errors (some symbols wrong/missing) and one program crashed some times. Now everything works fine again. Overall I liked Expeditions: Conquistador (would give 3/5 stars), but I recommend to use windows 7/8 64 bit.

Thanks for the feedback on this pavo! I'm glad it worked.
Thank you very much DeMignon, i had the same problem.
Danke Schön :)
