I just submitted a support ticket to GOG, and decided I'd post it on the forum as well as it seems to get more activity from users.
I bought this game yesterday, and during gameplay I've twice had my computer die unexpectedly. This wasn't due to a lack of battery (as it was full when I turned it on again), and hasn't happened to me before on this PC, which I've had for a number of years. It doesn't display a shutting down message, or anything, just switches off and tells me that it 'shut down unexpectedly' on startup of my computer.

The two occasions when it's happened so far were both in the starting town, in dialogues. The first was while Isabella was asking to join the expedition, the second when I was being asked for help to find a missing wife (IIRC, I didn't have enough time to really take in the quest). In both cases, I was in dialogue, deciding what my response would be.

I remember a similar effect occuring on a vista PC I had a while ago when I tried to run things full screen, but I believe that was fixed by a service pack.

This has happened to me in another (non-GOG) game now. It seems to be that my fan was struggling and causing my computer to overheat. Either way, nothing to do with the game, and don't let this thread prevent you from buying.
There is a bug in the game causing certain GPU to overheat, or more accurately, to use always use all GPU resources available. Either you computer is properly cooled and all this does is having the GPU fans spinning like there's no tomorrow, either space is more constricted in your computer and I guess the bios decides it's time to calm things done before damaging the computer and turns it off.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a fix in the work, notably because developers have a hard time pinpointing this bug.

The latest build has been updated to Unity 4.2, perhaps with the Unity update the overheating problem is fixed?

Here are the release notes for Unity 4.2:

Well, I got rid of the dust in my PC, and it hasn't crashed since, so I think that was the issue.

My fan's also got a lot quieter. Thanks!

You should mark your reply as the solution ;)
I couldn't, so I marked the comment above as one so people didn't keep looking at the thread!

Marked the proper post as the solution since I really didn't solve the problem :)

Woohoo, rep for solving my own problem! :) Maybe I should do this a few more times...
