how many minutes does the mercenary scientist need to work on the codex to complete the objective? feels like i've been waiting forever. is this a bug?

EDIT: I tried killing him and recruiting a new scientist and this time he seems to be actually making progress with the codex.. could have been a bug. the first one just stood at the machine forever and didnt progress
