Apparently, GOG.com's version is supposed to be updated to 1.01. However, in the GOG.com version, I see the option "Load Save" in the pause screen - which should be "Load and Save", because the 1.01 patch changed that. Is anyone else seeing that?

Same here. Other things from the 1.01 patch that should be changed but isn't:
* The second mess hall counter has been renamed to "mixer".
* Version added to Options screen.
* Diverse crash scenarios.
Gog.com: are you *sure* you haven't messed up the patching? :)
I now manually installed the official 1.01 patch (and a nocd-crack), and *now* it says "Load And Save", and the options screen displays "Version 1.01".
The GoG.com version is not patched properly to 1.01. QED.

Hmmm, just found something on the Steam forums concerning their version of Evil Genius:

We have confirmed this with the publisher. I am sorry for the confusion.
Please let us know if you have any further questions."

I can only suppose that it's the same case with GOG's version. Can someone from GOG confirm?

Hello,
We were confused about this too here at GOG, Rebellion assured us that this is the latest official version but all the things we were able to confirm at that time stated differently (the Load Save not renamed, "Mixer" and game version in the Options menu).
We have done some more research regarding this issue and it turned out that our version is the latest one. "camouflaged sentry gun" research is available, we had no game stability issues, no crashes and entry gun range was fine. (I am playing Evil Genius myself now :) )
For unknown to us reason (but I am sure that it was a good one), Rebellion didn't include some of the patch 1.01 notes.
Of course You could apply the official 1.01 patch to our version but I wouldn't recommend it. I did that to see what the difference is and I have encountered some random crashes that were not present in GOG's release, not to mention the CD check I had to bypass.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I assume it's best if I reinstall the plain GOG version, then.
Thanks for answering (and confirming), Paczyk. Now, let me get back to building my evil lair... ;-)

Thanks for that update Paczyk.
Do you think the official Bonus CD content could be added to the game listing, as well as a self-install?

Like most GOG, EG is the European version. Because the original EU release (in 2004) came 3 days later simple errors were fixed, i.e sentry guns. So the fact the disguised gun is researchable doesn't mean this is v1.01 it simply proves it's the EU release.

Installing v1.01 and then the unofficial patch will work but the NoCD v1.01 .EXE will crash if you Alt-Tab away. I have only experienced mid game crashes from creating my own unofficial patch: (http://www.multiupload.com/XVIQ3LDWAT, unpacks to 10 MB, list of changes included, for legalality issues does not include NoCD (requires 1.01 NoCD), old saves may not load, works on GOG and boxed retail EU version, does not include (but works with) World Domination Kit, still in progress.)

Also don't bother with v1.02 or 1.03 - they're italian language packs with fixes for the US version. Also text in UI textures have been really poorly editted.
