So I tuned in to the last livestream to check out the game and get a better look of it for future consideration as a purchase and while I am not quite ready to make the purchase, I like what I see so far and hope to see further development of the systems there in.
As this game gives me strong looter vibes and the game already has companions providing perks in game, an idea popped in my mind.
What if you could hire a single companion to join you on your adventures like in Diablo 2/3. These companions would have some limited customization options in terms of skills to choose (similar to Diablo 3), and would have a few item slots so that you can outfit them with some loot.
Now I am not advocating for a full on party system or wingmen that are equal to the player, as I understand that this would be difficult to do at this point and may not fit with your vision for the game. What I suggest here is more similar to what Diablo 3 does with it's follower system. In Diablo 3 the followers don't play the game for you and you as the player are still required to do the vast majority of the heavy lifting in combat, but with the right items/skills they do just enough to be worthwhile having around as a sidekick if you so choose and you can just as easily play without them and it doesn't hurt your gameplay experience.
Another example of this style of sidekick system minus the customization would be the Buddy system in Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. While I really dislike the timer/cooldown, the Buddy system works great in giving you the player a little companion to blast space ships with. Best of all whether you choose to use them or not, the game is balanced so that you don't really lose out much if at all by not using them.
I think this would be a great addition to your game and since it's singleplayer, wouldn't it be nice to give the player a little something so that they are not completely alone in this game world?
Of course I understand that 1.0 may already be mapped out and so doing something like this may be a big task at this point. Even so I would suggest to brainstorm on this for any potential future updates/expansions.
Bonus suggestion. While I am aware that your game is not a simulation, I do hope that the game world is brought to life with pirates, traders, police, military, faction and civilian ships going about their business similar to games like Freelancer as I feel like that is a staple for Space games to have non-scripted moments. Of course I am almost completely certain that this is already planned and so I do apologize if I am pointing out the obvious.
Thank you and all best! Cheers!
PS - Push those npc counts as high as you dare! :)
