I read on some forums that the Steam version does or did so I thought I should ask before installing.
I like GOG so that I can play games without the worry about things like this but it seems even some other GOG
games have had it so I have to be careful. I don't like things collecting my data without my consent and I have
read blocking Red Shell with firewall can make the game crash. I prefer to play offline as well since
I don't have the best internet connection which may be a problem if this Red Shell interferes with that.

Also I find it odd that Nintendo is not upset by Red Shell since it uses Mario games' well known iconography of the red
shell of Koopa Troopas.

GOG's latest version of Everspace is v1.3.3.36382. Was Red Shell removed from this version? Has anyone tested it out?
Any update on this? Has anyone tried it out on Windows?
After installing the game I wasn't able to find any Redshell files inside the game folder., the windows folder or the registry. :)
Hello!

The current version of Everspace does NOT contain any RedShell code.
We had included the RedShell plugin briefly in one of our patches (version 1.2.1) last year to track a marketing campaign, however we took it out shortly after (1.2.2) since users reported problems when playing offline, and we weren't entirely sure of the exact data that was sent to RedShell servers from the plugin and they didn't disclose this information to us.
For the brief period that the plugin was included, we ONLY tracked the first time the game was opened to identify a purchase, and did not obtain any personal data from players.
Good to know that RedShell is not in this Gog version. Do you know if that includes the Treasure Data being removed as well or if it even had it? Those two seem to go hand in hand and some companies only remove the RedShell part
but to me they are both one thing.

Also it is sad that you thought you had to use it to check if a game was purchased does Gog or Steam not tell companies?

One more addition: RedShell was never active in the GoG version, only in the Steam version of Everspace.

Everspace does not send out any data to any company anymore, including Treasure Data. We have terminated our account at RedShell and don't have access to any of their data anymore (we also never had access to any personal user data). I'm actually not sure whether Treasure Data received any user data, we haven't done package traces ourselves. Definitely nothing going on now.

In regards to your second question, the problem for many game dev companies is that Steam etc. don't tell you WHERE your purchases come from (e.g. a specific form of advertising, Youtube, Google etc.), so especially for indies that don't have big marketing budgets, it's hard to determine where to put your marketing money in - in contrast to the mobile platform stores which collect and share this kind of data by default. I'm just a programmer so don't take my word, but I'm sure that the PC stores will go in the same direction eventually, whether that is benefitting the players is another question of course.

Thanks for the info I guess I can mark this as solved then.

Does the game still reboot the whole computer upon installing because Unreal 4.20 or has that been fixed as well?

I just tried and it doesn't, though tbh I've never heard of this issue before. We're currently on 4.20.

I wondered because I saw some comments on Steam about and I think rockfish_andi responded to it:

Hi all, we're surprised to hear that in some cases the installation of the Unreal Engine prerequisits require a restart that does not ask the user for input. The game has been out since May 2017 and we've not heard a single report on this up until now. So we're assuming that either the Unreal Engine prerequisits installer changed with Unreal Engine 4.20 (which we're using since the last Everspace update in November), or that there was a Windows update that changed the behavior. We'll be letting Epic know that we've been receiving a lot of complaints recently, maybe the installer needs to be changed. "

I think the post had this address if that helps:

Oh okay it's the prerequisits, guess I already had them installed. That might be the case then.
