I just got this game after years of not being able to play it. I loved it back in the day. I'm playing on the keyboard, but the key bindings still have the guns firing through the joystick (which I don't even have attached). I try to reset it to another key (spacebar, what I used to use twenty years ago) and it won't save it. After I leave the screen it resets. What can I do?

You need to manually edit the "eaw.ini" file particularly settings like these:
