Thanks GOG to release this game, I'm very happy to see the game working in DDraw mode and with Newsheel Videos working ;)

But I noticed always when you finish the campaign the game crashes to desktop and it doesn't allow you to enter to the Hall of Fame where your Campaign Score keeps saved there. I tested this GOG EAW version in Windows 8.1 and 10 and the same bug happens.

This bug doesn't happen using Patch 1.28C so I advice GOG to use 1.28C Patch instead 1.28

The 1.28 version released by GOG contains a lot of code added to the 1.2 source code by members of the Code-Group under their agreement with Atari. It was used without permission, but in what we know to be a genuine error by GOG. In a PM that I received they admitted their error and offered to roll back to the 1.2 version, which was the last official release.
1.28c has even more of the code-group's work in it and based on the agreement it must not be sold at any price.
However, it is available for free.

Hi, how are the Newsreel videos for you inside the GoG version... any stuttering or freezes in the middle of the videos? Especially in the "Bigweek" and "Schweinfurt" video... ?

Thanks for checking :-)

Hi, all Newsreel videos work perfectly no stuttering or freezes, GOG really fixed that. But the in-game campaign videos don't work even cause this version uses 1.28 Patch that removed that videos for the game doesn't crash. But if they release 1.2 version they will have to fix the Campaign videos or else the game will keep crashing like in Battle of Britain Campaign where a video is played in the final missions when London is bombered ;)

I suppose this kind of video crash is what keeps happening to my Tempest campaign, which I can't get beyond the first two missions - it always crashes before the briefing for the 3rd.
The campaign begins in May '44, with the 3rd mission set to take place early June '44, so while I don't remember (someone who knows for sure could confirm), I guess there's a video shown there.

Let me say that I'm actually very glad about the rollback to 1.2. The code group's effort are appreciated and applauded, but the most important thing when getting a game on GOG (which used to stand for Good Old Games) is the nostalgia hit, and for that, the game should look as much as possible exactly like back then. Already the 1.28 version had some differences (tracers look, hitboxes, the single mission aircraft selection screen etc).
So having the 1.2 available and fixed up is great, we can get the community patches at our leisure.

And therefore, I would really hope to see a 1.2 fix for the campaign videos, rather than having to use a later version. I should add that have already tried:

- empty movies cdf file
- changing audio to 8-bit and back

ideas picked from the troubleshoot section of a "European Air War Help Site" - neither made a difference, the campaign still crashes.

I agree absolutely to you OLDIMMELMAN, we should be VERY happy that GOG has turned down the version number of their release. Version 1. 2 was superb in its original way, great that GOG did this move so that we have the untouched product as it was released from Microprose.

Did you report the video problems and situation in which the crashes occur to GOG already? I believe this should be the way as in this forum no one from GOG is monitoring the discussed problems since weeks... Additional I still have the problems with the newsreel films, as these run superb but everytime in the middle of the films short freezes or stuttering begins... like some buffer is full or something.

André
Wasn't the campaign movies chashes fixed with the roll back to the official 1.2 patch? At least the newsreel movies work fine for me so I must understand that the movies working GOG solution should be independant from the patch applied. But just guessing.

Unless the 1.28 did something internally to how the movies are played into the campaign. It was a very known problem that the movies ingame were problematic. Maybe they tweaked something in later fan patches.

If you only want nostalgia that is fine. When 1.28 was released PCs were already faster and we added a delay after a mouse-click for selections on the single mission parameters screen. That delay is not in the GoG 1.2 and trying to bring up the right selection on the parameters screen can be quite tricky, given that today's PCs are even faster.

EAW was released already set up for modding. Between 2000 and 2004 many many new campaigns such as Desert Air War were made. In all these different theatres the videos which were played in the default ETO careers were inappropriate.

The 1.28 versions allow the user to use the traditional selection screens using "OldStyle=1" in the eaw.ini.
If it is set to "OldStyle=0" you get the newer screens which were added so that flyable bombers could be selected.

Not yet as not certain that is the issue, waiting to see what happens in other campaigns and/or confirmation by others. Tried a US campaign, one starting in April '43 with P-47C; concluded first tour of duty and went on to second one (planes switched to P-51) and now in June '44, past D-Day with a beachhead in France established and no crash.
Also wondering if it best to report it to GOG or to try Retroism directly.

With gog-1.28 and 1.2 alike, the campaign crashes while the newsreel videos play fine (albeit with some stuttering mentioned by others). I admit trusting GOG Galaxy to do the rollback correctly rather than a clean install (ctd still happens in campaigns started in 1.2, not just trying to load previous ones).

Thank you, I didn't know that.

Just one detail. The newsreel videos do not stutter for me. They play fine, The intro, the newsreel and the planes info movies. I can not say anything about the final campaign videos though.

So it seems to be something individual computers related. Not a glitch of bug per se.

Same here with the Tempest Campaign, interesting about the video timings as that seems to tie in as I never see any newsreels with regard to the invasion and on one campaign got as far as !12 June 1944 and was tasked with taking out a Radar Station in prep for invasion! Have reported to GOG and ended up here. If I get a solution I shall post it up.

scharmers: EAW 128C causes 7217 launch error with GOG EAW
I copied my GoG 1.2 folder, and applied the 1.28c patch correctly and it ran without a 7217 error in Win 10.

I set-up a single mission from the Allied Carrier, the first raised deck carrier used in the 1.28 series
