The games opening cinematic plays fine,. I can create a named game in campaign mode but once I choose a difficulty level and try to start the game, I get a "can't flip render surface" error and the game freezes. Any idea how to fix this? I'm fairly non-technical so laymans terms are appreciated :)

Could both of you please post your PC specification? Most importantly, what operating system and graphics card you have.

This sounds like graphics card error, and common troubleshooting steps in that case are:
- install DirectX 9 libraries
- update your graphics card drivers
- run the game as administrator (right-click on shortcut, pick relevant option)

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 - latest drivers

Shoot I have the same problem - the game freezes after choosing the difficulty level and naming the campaign. Just hangs, and the sound starts skipping/repeating

I have Window 7 home premium
and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5800 graphics card

no worries I can send in a support ticket if need be, just thought I'd jump on this bandwagon

Maybe using the omega drivers solve this problem:

Some users report the same problem with Etherlords 2.

I have the same problem. As soon as I get ingame my hero won't move and when i ctrl+alt+delete i get the error.

Im running Windows 7 ultimate and Geforce gtx 580

Ooops I double posted ab this one...

Anyway here is a solution for the flip render surface thing:

Start Etherlords - do not start a Campaign. Start a duel. Surrender. Go back to Campaign menu. Start a Campaign and there you go.
