That torn page you get by bashing open a chest at the beginning, has part of a recipe on it, according to Game Banshee it's nothing but I can't sell it so is it a quest item or not? The real reason I ask is if it's a quest item I want to wait till I get a key to the chest so I can grab some extra exp for unlocking it instead of bashing it open.

If we are talking about the same torn page, then no. It's on there... the recipe is just Willow Sap and Sulfur. If that is the note you are talking about, then you can discard it now that you know the recipe.
