I ask because Book 1 does not (despite teasing the player with a gender selection), but Book 2 does (to the point of the feature being advertised). For me, the inability to play a female character is why I haven't played Book 1.

Yes, Book III allows you to play as female character in the same way Book II does. Like you, I wish Basilisk Games had implemented this option in their first game too. Anyway, hope this helps.
