I installed the game yesterday but haven't been able to start playing because it goes comatose a few seconds after entering the menu screen. The music goes into an infinite one-second loop (like a broken CD) and the only available ways of exiting the game are rebooting or killing the process from the Task Manager in windowed mode.

I'm operating on an old Asus laptop which has a single-core 1.6GHz Celeron, 1G RAM and WinXP SP3 (up-to-date), and integrated ATI Radeon Express + SoundMax chipsets for graphics and sound. I suspect the problem might be related to sound as some older games have had similar symptoms (on different computers) when the problems have been related to audio output. Unfortunately Enclave apparently does not produce an error log on crashing - at least not in this case.

The possibility of my firewall interrupting the game is already ruled out, but aside that I haven't been able to track down any other possible causes for the hang-up. I'm a bit baffled as this is the first GOG game that has had any kind of problems running on this computer, and as my desktop computer won't be available for use for some time, I cannot test Enclave on a different setup either. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

All of a sudden, the game didn't hang...that is, not before I had watched the intro and taken a few steps in the jail where the story starts. It seems the problem is the same as what others have been complaining about here, namely sluggish performance. The interesting part is that my laptop does not support multithreading so I cannot remedy the problem just by turning off extra cores/threads. Also, the game ran just fine in windowed mode, with nearly all graphical extras turned on.

The problem, on my old laptop at least, appears to boil down to the game's sudden need for extra computing power. I had a perfomance monitoring program on while playing just to see whether there would be any dramatic changes, and it turned out the 'crash' is actually the result of my computer running out of resources - processor usage went up from little under 40% to full 100% in a split second. This would also happen before I even got through the start menu. To make a long story short, my laptop is powerful enough to run Enclave easily except when the program goes crazy, but I have no means of fixing this.

*sigh* I've tried everything possible to no avail. Turning off other applications (including the antivirus & firewall) didn't help either, nor did the different compatibility modes in XP. It seems this game has issues beyond repair :(
