I download and installed the game, everything went fine with that. When I decided to play, the screen goes black as if it was going to start but suddenly returns to the desktop and EE2 running in the background. If I click on it, black screen again and back to desktop. My only option is to close the game.
EE2 used to work fine when I had Win7, but after going to Win8, it just doesn't work. Might it be related?
Also tried: all compability modes, admin & color mode, none worked.

I'm running Windows 8 64bit as well and I'm facing the exact same issue. Please if someone, somehow, can help us do so. Thanks.

I've got a reply from GoG Support and they said that does not work on Windows 8. Too bad.
so how do we get money back then?
the good news is that I may have found the fix for Windows 8. I am fairly certain of it as I have done similar things in the past. The bad news is that since I am still a new member on this forum I am limited to what I can post, namely links. When I attempt to post the information the forum it reads the characters as if I was trying to post a link.

Solution: perhaps one of you would like to volunteer trying to fix this and I will pm you the information
Same thing here, Joao_lora. The only difference is that I'm trying to run the game on a Win7 64 bits machine, but i'm getting the same result: black screen and back to the desktop. It happens with both EE2 and EE2 Art of War expansion. I would like very much a solution, I'll try doc_rock2's solution if he's still up to this.
I have come up with a crude fix posted as a jpeg to get around the "no link rule"

This is a pretty crude fix, it would be good if someone could make a better one but hopefully it will work until someone does.

(please excuse any gramatial errors as english is my second langue)

1) open notepad

2) Copy and Paste the following into Notepad exactly as is:

taskkill /F /IM explorer.exe
EE2.exe
Start explorer.exe

3) Click save as (save it on your desktop so you can find it easier) and name it:

EE2.bat

***Don't forget to select all files. This might be a minor thing to do but it is always recommended to follow instructions as given.

4) Go to where Empire Earth 2 is saved. For example, Computer/C:/all programs/ sierra/empire earth2.

Drag and drop the file that you just created into that folder.

Note: The file that you just created will just have like a gray circle image or something similar.

5) Play it. If it does not run, right click on your new file and go to properties and click run as administrator.

6) Create a desktop shortcut.

Additional Note: Sometimes when you log out the screen resolution will be messed up. This is normal in some cases. Just go to metro and log out of your Windows 8 account and log in back again. It should fix it.

^This.

I created this batch file and it works fine and includes the command to restart explorer. Not a perfect solution but it does get the game working until someone comes up with a legitimate patch.
