Installed EE2 without any problems. But when I open it, it starts up, minimizes to desktop, and then when I try to maximize it again, it just minimizes again.

Have tried running it in compatibility mode for win98, 200, XP.
Have tried running it with "Disable Visual Themes, Disable desktop composition" turned on.

I have also tried reinstalling the program, and running it as admin, with no success.

If anyone knows how to solve this, please help!

Yes installing a better game and play it :) Empire Earth 1 for the win!

Empire Earth 2 was minimizing on my Win 7 64 bit as well.

I sorted it out by choosing the following compatibility settings:
Windows 2000
Disable Visual Themes
Disable Desktop Composition
Run Program as administrator

Seems to be working my side...

I am having the same problem, the answer mentioned above did not work nor solve it for me...Really waiting for someone to fix it...

I haven't tested this game though - on a new pc without Firefox.

I don't have firefox, so I guess it is not related.

This is kind of odd, but works for me. Run in Windows 95 compatibility mode. When I start it, it does what you describe. After the second or third time I try to run it, it works. Just keep trying.

I had the same problem. I lowered my desktop background to 1024x768....seems to run now.

I would like to raise this issue too. I am currently running windows 8x64 with Geforce 670 and the latest drivers. I've researched the issue here and have found a number of possible solutions. One is that this is a possible conflict with firefox or chrome. I have shut both of these down and still the game minimizes. The other method is to disable desktop composition under the compatibility tab. This apparently works in most cases. Unfortunately Windows 8 does not have this option.

By reducing the game to 1024x768 it will start but will then minimize itself as soon as I try to change the resolution. I have tried to patch using the universal widescreen patcher but this just breaks the ability to run it at 1024x768 at all and means I have to reinstall.

Has anyone found any other solutions to this problem?

Just wanted to let you know that I think I found the solution to the minimizing problem some of us are having on windows 8. If you google "empire earth 2 windows 8 fix" you will get a link at the top of the list that leads to a message board (apologies for not providing the link but the message board won`t let me post it).

Download the two files, one for vanilla empire earth 2 and one for the expansion. Run the file for the game you want to play first. It will detect empire earth 2 running and kill the windows explorer that causes the game to minimize. Once its done this, ALT+Tab will get you into the game running fullscreen at all its resolutions and not just at 1025x768 or in a window.
