I saw that game ranger has EE1 listed in their games available list. Has anyone actually tried playing EE1 thru game ranger?

While I don't know how many of them specifically are GoG players, there are around 2,500 EE1 games played each day through GameRanger.

2,500 is overrated. I'd say remove one zero.

LoL scotttkevill dont lie their has never been that many on game ranger and game ranger is full with loads of cheaters. Best play to is save ee because we have lobby chat game ranger has no way of talking to friends

I've tried GameRanger, but any EE game expects version 1.5, which is not what you get from GOG (2.0)...
other ideas?

Yes. Save-EE.com download our lobby client and play by using the direct connect feature :).
