I couldn't run the game on my netbook with Windows 7 because of the screen resolution which was too small.

So I tried to run the game on my other computer with Ubuntu. The game seems to install properly with Wine, but when I launch it, I see the splash screen with Empire Earth, and then the screen displays some strange colors and freezes.

Has anyone managed to run the game on Linux?

You can get around the problem you were having by installing directmusic with Winetricks. However, the most I have got out of it is launching properly into the game's main menu, but the game itself can't be run because the mouse is non-functional. Nobody else seems to have much luck with either:
