OK, it definitely appears to be a tweak is needed using the DX wrapper. Everything was set to the default of "set by application" so I changed the display mode to 1024x768 60hz and started playing. I was able to keep it running well past the points I initially had gotten to and was able to *choose* to stop playing, instead of the gods of chaos deciding to stop my game. :)

Now, I do recall it was always a buggy game so I'm guessing frequent saving will be important, but it does look like the matter is resolution and how it does not like modern rezs.
There is an autosave option you can turn on
Make sure you contact Support if you're still having issues; the staff aren't often on the game specific forums. (though GOG of course don't usually fix bugs that were in these old games from the start, they just aim to make the game work as well as it did "back in the day")

Sorry for kind of necroing this thread, but some seem to still have issues despite the DXwrapper fix, such as myself.

I had the same issue with crashing after a minute or so ingame and no above solution worked for me, but did find a solution that works in my case if others want to try:

1 - Go to the game folder, then in there go inside the "DAT" folder.
2 - Once inside open the EFS.ini file as a text.
3 - Change the line "video_on=1" to "video_on=0" and save.

This will deactivate the intro video, but after that change I was able to play for a couple hours with no issue.

This worked perfectly for me! Thank you so much!
Let us know if you have any trouble playing under the Enhanced version

Necroing this. But I'm having the exact same crash I posted about here 2 years ago with the enhanced edition. I'll post if I can remember how I solved it last time.

I have tried changing what I said I did previously, but nothing. So the Enhanced edition crashes for me within seconds of loading the game, often right before this, the cursor freezes up and can't be moved.

HDIAndrew: I had it crash on my second game. In the DirectX Wrapper you access in your Windows start menu, I changed Display Mode to "Set by application" and it has not crashed since. I am in year 4976 of my third game
Does this exist in Win 8.1 ? I could not find it.

So far, the only way I can get 1.5 to run is using dgvoodoo2 and rebooting to clear out any other conditions. These seem to come from old games such as Birth of the Federation, Fallout 2, Alpha Centauri etc.

It would be nice with 1.5 to finally run the game without suffering from the laggy space map mouse and inability to move ships between systems.

I had this with GOG 1.4 as well but was hoping for better with 1.5 and beyond ....
We are trying to find a Win 8.1 machine to test on.
