dtgreene: I have just abandoned that game, not because of the game being in Japanese, but rather because of the game not giving enough experience points.
Yes, it seems to be a big problem with this kind of games. I stopped playing Elminage Gothic because at some point everyone in party needed about 300k exp to level up and usual mob was giving about 3k exp. So they are expecting me to defeat 100 mobs in order to level up. I know that Japanese like mindless grinding, but this is too much for a sane person.

In Elminage Gothic, it actually does get better. Your experience requirements won't grow any higher, while stronger enemies continue to yield more XP. Of note, I believe the game expects your party to be in the 400s level wise for the game's ultimate superboss.

Wizardry Summoner, though, is atrocious in terms of XP. For quite a while, XP gains in the 20s are typical, when the first level up takes around 1,000 XP and the experience requirements grow exponentially through level 13. Meanwhile, the game gives you far more money than you know what to do with; getting around 5000 gold total for an early-game encounter is not that unusual.

f_zul: How do you play 3DS version? 3DS is region-locked and Elminage haven't been translated so far.

dtgreene: Well, you could do the following:
1. Import a 3DS from Japan. This gets you around the region lock.
2. Import the game from Japan. There isn't anything preventing you from importing the physical game.
3. Play the game. Yes, you might not understand the language (though it helps if you learn to read katakana), but you can still play the game in the original Japanese.
So you can actually read japanese? Or you just memorized some characters and combinations and just went with it? I already thought about importing native 3DS, but I tend to think that I need a bit more skills in reading first.

I like the game.

Like its classes, combat and how each character progresses and their spells/skills.

What I dont like is how RNG if I complete a dungeon.
You NEED TO DISCOVER secret walls in order to progress the main campaign. Problem being that even having a pure Thief on your party is random that he/she discover the only wall in the WHOLE DUNGEON to move forward the main story!!!!

Ive spent almost 4 hours on the god damn tree exploring. From my experience on the 2nd dungeon, I knew it had to be a secret wall...

Gave up and found a STEAM guide on the game, STEAM STORE. Found out the same wall I was looking at it for almost 4 hours looking why I wasnt moving onward, because its RANDOM that someone with a Thief Skill would find it!!!!!!!

Its random that the Thief in your party notify you of a secret wall! Its random that the Thief detects it!
Believe me! Ive tried it and experiment it! Its random that a Thief, or someone with a Thief skill, detects a secret wall.
You could be looking at the wall that you NEED to explore to discover it and the Thief may not tell you about it.

I can tolerate the difficulty on enemies instant death(beheading) a guy since you can cast buff/debuff/status spells, I was tolerating the map design and the penalty for using a Magic Map (M&M games since the 2nd one made this trivial thanks to Wizard Eye), I can tolerate the lazy design on items transferring...
But this? This just takes the cake!

I like map exploring as much as the next guy but trolling the player like this is intolerable.

Why not have a Detect Secret Walls skill works 100% of the time instead of being random?

What I do not tolerate is after paying for a game, its takes the player for a ride! Artificial difficulty with no valid excuse whatsoever! Its bullcrap.
For me this is a BUYERS BEWARE game! And I will be playing with this guide since I do not find it fun, that for me to progress is to waste my valuable time with this mechanic.

I personally never relied on someone finding a secret wall. I just pressed "Search" at every wall I knew there could be something behind (if you look at the map you can see behind which walls is still unexplored space). That's guaranteed success and not random.

theonlyone.338: I didnt like it. It was too hard, there was no map in any of the dungeons. I think that 2nd one gives me very little reason to keep playing. How are you supposed to beat 1st person rpg without a map system?

I would say that Etrian Odyssey is better than this game as you can find where you are going. But thats like saying crap instead of shit.

I find these games to be boring because of the fact that there is no story and without a solid story, I cannot be bought.
I just got this one. It's been on my Wishlist for years and I decided to grab it on the Summer Sale and get my freebie game along with it. Everyone tells me this game is the closest to Wizardry 1-5 that you can get and everything you're complaining about is exactly why I picked this one up and why I loved the classic Wizardry games. My 12 year old self in the dark, huddled around the screen with just a desklamp and some graph paper. Mapping all the dungeons was so much fun.

I can't wait to install this and get my head bashed in a few times before figuring things out. The brutal difficulty of the original Wizardry games is legendary and I, for one, love it.

What was the story of Wizardry: Proving Ground of the Mad Overlord? Hell if I could tell you. Hell if I cared.
