The recipe for the chem "Tough Guy" I found requires something called a 'Healing Root'. I have beaten the game and explored far and wide and have not found any such items.

Do these actually exist in the game?

The only 'healing roots' I've found so far in my 60+ hours of play are the quest-specific ones on Slugbeast Isle, north-east of Goliat. They are, however, pre-faced as "mature" healing roots. In PB games, anything that is quest-specific tends to have such a pre-face (such as the 'deadly' slime drakon in the Edan converter). That leads me to believe that regular healing roots are supposed to exist, probably adjacent to water. It could be a bug. If I remember correctly, Gothic 3 had almost no mana plants to speak of in a very early launch version, and was fixed later. Could be a similar issue.
I play the German version, and 'Heilwurzel' is one of the common plants you find everywhere (Tavas).

For healing potions and other things there often exist multiple recipes, for using different ingedrients.

With healing potions you have a recipe each for

- healing plant (Heilpflanze) + water bottle
- healing root (Heilwurzel) + wine
- based on the next lower form (a normal healing potion made out of 2 small ones, for example)

That's why I check every merchant I can find for recipes I not yet have.

Slightly OT: If you do not want to use stims there are many food recipes that have very similar effects, like +20 to a specific resistance for 60 seconds, or the bloody burger that gives 60 LP in 20 seconds. It could be that the survival skill 'good eater' raises the numbers a little, but I haven't taken it yet (maybe next level up, or the one after that).

The stats are lower because it's regular food, not some high powered chemical from a lab. I play without stims (no specific reason, just because) and am glad I have this option at all. =)
To TimJD:

In the English version, healing "plant" + wine makes a healing potion, and healing "herb" + water makes a healing potion. The question, however, regards the recipe for the "Tough Guy" stim, which requires electronic scrap, natural elex, and healing "roots". (It reduces damage 50% for 45 seconds). There are no healing "roots" anywhere, except the "mature healing roots" for the Goliet quest. Perhaps in the German version you have (or can find) the recipe for the Tough Guy stim and see what the ingredients are in German.

I just took 'good eater' and the burger that used to give me 60 LP in 20 seconds now gives me 180 LP!!! The time stayed the same but the buff tripled. Yeah, I officially no longer need potions (except for those I make myself). o_O;

Just thought I'd let you guys know.
A bit late to this party, but for anyone that's reading this and wondering about the healing roots, they're not available in-game, so there's a mistake/issue with the recipe. But, there's a fix Here if anyone wants to use it. Note that it does not make healing roots appear in the game, rather it changes the 'Tough Guy' recipe to use Healing Herbs instead. Also note that this mod makes another change so you can use stims out of your inventory so you don't need to put them on the quick bar.
Maybe they'll fix it at some point, but in the meantime I'll take an unofficial fix. Thanks, all.
