Hello!
After you clear Helgen and follow whomever you chose to side with, you should raid Bleak Falls Barrow. It's not mandatory, just a good idea in general. When you go to Whiterun you'll get a quest where you would have to hoof it back to Riverwood if you didn't raid BFB already.
If you are having difficulty with the giant spider in Bleak Falls Barrow, you can lure it to the door, and take pot shots on the other side, where it can't get to. Rinse and repeat until it's dead.
When fighting the Dragr Overlord it's a good idea to smack him with whatever you have and run before he hits you. If you are a lowbie, you are going to be pretty squishy at this stage.
