I started playing TES Arena 2011 and played it for a year or so before stopping.
2 years ago, I got it on GOG and decided to start playing again. I copied over my old saves to continue from there but I was so lost and didn't remember where I was or was doing... or how to play. So I decided to start over and deleted the saves. I played for a few months and then a year ago I took a break after playing 20 hours.

Today I decided to start playing it again and noticed something was wrong with the saves (wrong names and my character was not where he was supposed to be) so I checked the folder and it turned out it was my 2011-2012 saves.
How is that possible? I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled the game since last (it's so small I saw no point in uninstalling it).
The only thing I can think of is that Galaxy somehow had my old saves in the cloud and restored them but I had played for 20 hours for months without any problems so why would it suddenly replace them?

I don't use Galaxy, so I can't comment on this aspect of the problem.

I have two Arena installations, the GOG one and the generic ArenaSetup one. There is one big difference between the two: In the GOG version, the saves are in a folder named cloud_saves (although I don't have Galaxy installed), while ArenaSetup holds them in the main game folder.
The GOG change-log for Arena mentions an update in March 2019 described as "added cloud saves functionality", which I interpret as "moving (or copying?) save games from the game folder to the (new) cloud_saves folder and implementing some sort of cloud synchronisation functionality (to be used when said cloud synchronisation is enabled in Galaxy)".

This GOG version must have been active when you copied your old saves to the GOG Arena game folder two years ago, and I suppose GOG Arena copied or moved them over to cloud_saves when you started playing. Is it possible that the save games you copied from the old non-GOG Arena game folder are still in the GOG game folder?

It might be worth checking if and how this could have caused or contributed to your problem.

Well, they are there now. Could be that I only deleted them from one place and somehow they got restored from the other save folder.
