Dear GOG,
could you please get together with Bethesda and arrange for the recent 1170 GOG update to be re-released with just a change to a unique version number?
This would really help out the modding community as then it would be a lot easier for the SKSE and Address Library mods to cater for new and older mods with the new updated exe file..
At the least can you persuade Bethesda to use unique versioning for unique exes in the future?

Are we ever going to get Skyrim AE to play on GoG? This is excessive! I bought the game here to avoid the DRM and now I can't play it at all. You are about to lose a customer.
What's the point of getting a DRM game if you have to download Steam's version to get to play Skyrim SE/AE?

Fallout 4 (GOG/Steam) works with the same script extender.
Why Skyrim dosen't work!

Both Steam and GOG have the same version number but have different executables. It wouldn't be hard to get the script extender to tell the difference but it would cause issues on the script side of things. The SKSE devs are looking into a way to remedy this but it might take awhile.
I'm guessing this has to do with the new GOG update. I have over 100 mods, including SKSE & SKYUI. The main thing is I didn't update. I last update on Steam completely messed up all my mods. Before, after the authors updated them, everything was fine. This last update Bethesda rolled out totally broke many of the mods. Same seems to have happened with whatever update GOG received.
The cynic in me thinks Bethesda did this purposefully to detract from the disaster of Starfield.
Everyone knows Skyrim is a hugely modded game. Checking to make sure an update is mod friendly should be top of the list when releasing an update. I realize it's not Bethesda's job to make sure mods work, but they're always espousing how mod friendly their games are and how they support the modding community.
I'm confused. SKSE already marks the DRM-free GOG version as the "GOG Anniversary Edition build". It's already marked as different.

I'm also not clear on why the DRM-free GOG version isn't treated as the main version when mod authors seem to universally despise the Creation Club and its incarnations and everyone seems to universally despise Steam's automatic updates. We didn't imagine this phenomenon; there have been plenty of forum threads and Youtube videos attesting to these facts. As far as I recall, only the STEP guide author was having sandy diaper rash about the GOG version existing.

Like, everyone's going to assume I'm pulling my hair out over this for daring to say so, even though I've got a smorgasbord of other games I can easily play and involve myself with in the meantime, and will be doing so as soon as I finish this post (which will make me forget about this entire thread even existing), but does it really take twelve-plus days to deliberate over this issue? It's not as if they're consulting with NATO.

I second both the above motions. I don't care how many people are on Steam. I'm not, and I'm glad I'm not. I always download the installation files from GoG and install them myself, when I choose and where I choose. If it's my PC, why would I let other people make changes to it? I already face problems from letting Microsoft update Windows. For me, that's the limit. If they screw up and you can't use the software you paid for ... for a few days, weeks, or months, who does it affect?

And as for SKSE's assumption that they could depend on version numbers instead of something more accurate like hashing the executable ... in hindsight that's just asking for trouble.
One of the SKSE devs got in contact with GOG and an update is coming to address the issue. They will release an update once GOG gets said update.

Oh nice!
Out of interest, where did you learn this? Do you 'know people' or is there a public forum I can lurk on?:)
