It seems like Redguard runs at about 10 fps average, i could maybe deal with it if it didn't freeze for a sec every 5 seconds.
Any suggestions?

The 3Dfx version of this game runs pretty bad in DOSBox. I uninstalled it after trying for hours to tweak it unsuccessfully. You are not the only one.

Same here. Played with the settings and all, but some of them don't seem to do anything (full screen?) and it just won't run smoothly. I'm so disappointed, having waited for this game for years. :/

I'm getting the same problems. 10-15 fps. I'm using a AMD graphics-card.

For me it's the same - 10-20 frames, very unstable. I've tried it on two systems - one with NVidia, the other with ATI-chipset, so I don't think the graphic card has something to do with it. It's a limitation of dosbox, it just doesn't have enough performance for such a game... I really regret having bought the game here.

When does the game seem to slow down for all of you? I've played a few minutes into the game and am walking around the port at the begining and everything seems smooth at the moment. Prior to this release I had Redgaurd running under Dosbox/Windows 95 and that was a bit choppy but playable. Just turning Fraps on for a few minutes with the gog release and I'm getting FPS from 20-32. I'm running windows 10 on an nvidia card btw.

I wont speak for everyone else, but in my case it is playable, but choppy which degrades the sword fighting in this game in a big way as far as accuracy is concerned. I believe it is the emulation of Glide that is the problem with performance. 3Dfx emulation is just plain slow in DOSBox. I understand there is a quest breaking bug in the software rendered version of this game, but at least GOG could have given us the option or this may have been something Bethesda did. Either way, I think it is unfortunate as this game ran silky smooth over 15 years ago on my 3dfx equipped gaming rig.

I never played Redguard, not for the lack of trying mind you, so i was about to buy it, then i saw a negative review and your post so i decided not to buy it until GOG can release a version that is actually playable.

I'm having similar issues, myself. I played the CD version on a 333mhz Gateway machine back on the day. With NO 3d accelerator card, just basic software graphics. And THAT played smoother tha it does on my current macbine. I loved this game back then. But as things stand now, it's completely unplayable.

GOG.com , I love you guys, I really do. But this version has been, in my opinion, an epic fail. I don't know if there is anything you guys can do to fix it, but if you can... please do! Or at least tell us what WE can do to tweak the settings for decent performance.

Okay, I'm sure that someone else (if not everyone else) has managed to find this solution before me, but I'm posting here what I've discovered through trial and error.

If you installed Redguard to the default directory, go to "c:/GOG Games/Redguard/" and look for something called "DOSBox Configuration". It's a shortcut, from what I can tell. Double-click it. A small window will pop up. On the Basic Settings tab, change the graphic mode to Direct3D, and check the "Full Screen" box. On the "Advanced Settings" tab, set the window resolution to your preferred resolution. I recommend whatever you have your desktop set to. Save your settings, then click Start Game.

If this doesn't work for you, tweak the settings and try again. On my PC, it still doean't run buttery-smooth, but it's actually very playable, as opposed to what it was set to "out of the box".

No, thats not exactly the problem. I've tested the game in Dosbox with a (real) Voodoo2 and its also very slow. The Problem seems, that the Glide memory mapping is very slow in Dosbox, and Redguard relies on a fast read speed. For example making screenshots takes plenty of time.

Other games like Tomb Raider work very well with a Dosbox / Voodoo2 setup.

Interesting. Are you a registered user over at the Vogons forums by any chance? Many of the DOSBox developers hang there and you could present your findings to them. Maybe something that can be optimized.
