The title might be a bit misleading, but it`s kind of hard to describe ;)

Basically, I have a little quirk: I want to play 3D games in what I call "visual parity" - that entails steady 60 (or more) fps and absolutely no stutter whatsoever. Think perfect v-sync. It`s hard to achieve, but not impossible - depends on a game and hardware.

Some games are more willing to comply and some much less - Bethesda games are notorious for fighting against it tooth and nail ;) thanks to the quirks of their engines. All in all, I spent countless afternoons (never mind waiting nearly a decade for proper hardware) trying to get Morrowind to run this way and ultimately failed.

My rig is by no means a top end but still, quite strong for an old game: i2500+GTX 670+8GB RAM+G-SYNC monitor. I run much newer games equal or v.close to that "visual parity".

Now, Morrowind is kind of close - but there still is a slight stutter still. We`re talking "slight" here: most people would be absolutely happy with it (after all majority don` t mind playing 30 fps VSYNC-off games). The version I`m using has only some gfx from Overhaul mod enabled - nothing fancy. Also Distant lands is set quite low - about 6 cells.

I was wondering if this is ultimately down to the engine code itself, or do I need even more powerful hardware? Did anybody got Morrowind working in a super-smooth state?

Gamebryo-based games are fairly famous for having a micro-stutter issue, are you running into that?
No, don`t think this is it - microstutter is quite pronounced in later Gamebryo titles, Oblivion and up - that`s why they all have dedicated Stutter Remover mods. And its quite different visually than this here - for example if you circle an object (say, a rock) in Oblivion you`ll see it stutter really bad.

I never had this problem in Morrowind. The stutter here is sort of different. Also, I get New Vegas, newer and gfx-wise more demanding game to run perfectly smooth.

That`s why I wonder if anybody ever achieved this "perfect" performance. Maybe it`s just impossible because of engine quirks. I just tried another install - without even the Overhaul and it still is not quite perfect...get over 120fps looking over landscape, which drops significantly when looking over the buildings - but still stays over 80 fps. In theory, locking framerate and using GSYNC should make it perfect, however it isn`t so.
Go to your Install DIR, make a copy of Morrowind.ini for backup, and then edit the original. Look for a setting "Max FPS" and set it to 60. Done. Expect it to run MUCH smoother after.

For whatever reason, when Morrowind was programmed, they allowed the engine to render ahead on the current frame, WAY beyond what it would ever need. For some reason, this was never changed back. The solution? Alter it yourself. It takes about 30 seconds to change it and be back in the game.
