I never played Morrowind and I'm considering trying to get into. But... When I see all the mods/fix, I'm totally lost !
I would like to play it, the most vanilla as possible for my first playthrough. What do you suggest me ? To instal no mods or fix at all ? Some of them ? (if yes, which ones ?)
Advices are welcome :)

Play without any mods, to start with. For a beginner, there is not even a point in using the official mods, not to mention the graphical enhancements or the unofficial patch (you could install that patch, if you know how to do it, but you'll be fine without until you are very familiar with the game).
This guy's post has some excellent suggestions.

If you want to go for Vanilla playthrough go for it! Personally I wouldn't want to play it without MGSO. Same game, just really good looking now.

I see, so it will be pure vanilla I think :)

I saw this post, and all is interesting and well explained ;)
But when you don't know a game at all, and that there is so much possibilities.. Sometimes, some games need some little fix, even when you want to enjoy them as vanilla as possible (some bugs fixed for example).
That's why I wanted to ask !

Sure, MGSO makes the game visually wonderful... But I'll do a first playthrough before testing it :) I like (love!) old graphics !

Thank you very much both of you !

I'm late to the party. :)
Anyway, I realize that my guide is too complicated for many newcomers. So, I hope I'll find the time to add in a section that people who don't want to make many decisions can follow.

If anyone still wonders about the best mods for a first-time play-through:

Purist version - obviously not suitable for radical purists who are against fixes:
Morrowind Code Patch - includes fixes and optional features that affect gameplay, the engine but not the content
Solstheim Rumor fix - fixes the broken Rumor topic
Delayed DB Attack V2 - delays the start of the Tribunal expansion. Even Bethesda recognized the need for that feature as they delayed the expansion in their XBOX version. I highly recommend against starting your first play-through without a similar mod.
MGE XE (for new computers)/FPS Optimizer (for old computers) - Widescreen resolutions and more. Everything is optional.

People who want lore-friendly content:
Morrowind Rebirth (Improves graphics and expands almost every part of the game. Also fixes the Solstheim Rumor)
Tamriel Rebuilt (Adds in the mainland of Morrowind and tries to deliver the same quality that Bethesda did. Is only partially completed)

More modern graphics:
MGSO

You may also want to check out the open-source engine supporting Morrowind:
OpenMW (incompatible with MGE XE, Morrowind Code Patch, FPS Optimizer)

Thank you very much.
I know this is an old thread, but I want to throw in LGNPC http://lgnpc.org/. These mods add in tons of dialogue for common people in a lot of towns, giving towns and peasants much more depth. Some even have small quests for you to do I think. These are the only mods I would truly recommend to a Morrowind newcomer though. Personally, I'm running Morrowind Overhaul + LGNPC + Birth Signs are More Fun + Guar Riding (haven't tried this one yet though).
