Hilda: Does anyone know a workaround to get FNIS working for the GOG version of Skyrim? I've tried a few times using MO2, always get "2 warnings" and if I ignore the warning, CTD! It seems that FNIS is obsessed with "Steam" and even if you point it to your GOG version, it just warns you then crashes. I checked on the Nexus and the author of FNIS retired in March 2020! I looked at Nemesis, but I just want FNIS for the bouncy KS hairdos and Nemesis does not seem to have any hair mods

mihuk: I have been able to run FNIS. But in my case it probably caused stutter.
After installation of the mod, remember to run exe in your game directory (subdirectory Tool). Detais are in readme.

Edit: I've found it:
You will have to run a generator tool GenerateFNISforUsers.exe (part of FNIS Behavior) every time you have installed or uninstalled FNIS, or an FNIS based mod. In addition, when you uninstall a mod that uses FNIS Creatures, you first have press the "De-Install Creatures" button, before you run the "Update FNIS Behaviors"
Thank you for replying. I have tried running FNIS (for GOG Skyrim) through MO2, and also, by manually installing FNIS to the GOG Skying folder. Both times, I have an error which shows that whatever I do, FNIS looking for a Steam version of Skyrim. This is the error message:

[Generator: C:\All My Games\Skyrim Anniversary Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe
>>Warning: Bad installation. Generator not run from <Skyrim_Data>\Tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users. If you use a mod manager, run FNIS from its list of supported tools.<<
Skyrim SE 64bit: ??.??.?? - C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\ (Steam)
>>Warning: Expected generator path: C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users not found<<

The first warning is not true - I am running the generator from the Skyrim data folder, just not the Steam version. Any ideas?

Maybe stupid question, but are you sure you have FNIS for Skyrim Special Edition?

Haha! Not a stupid question. I checked. Yes that link takes me exactly the version of FNIS that I am trying to use.

TAGma: FNIS author added some sort of DRM check years ago to prevent users with an illegal copy of the game (at that time only available on Steam) from not being able to use it.
Now that Skyrim is available on GOG, maybe it will also be flagged as illegal.
However, FNIS/NEMESIS is not required.

Physics mods require "Faster HDT-SMP", which was recently updated to 1.6.640 (Steam), it doesn't work on 1.6.659 (GOG). Author is already aware of the situation, but it was unclear whether they intend to make a GOG version or not.
Hopefully the author of FNIS will allow someone to update it for GOG. I'll be watching this space!
FWIW, I've been using Nemesis for my FNIS needs. Been working fine so far. Haven't tried any of the new-fangled stuff like DAR, MXO, and such. Not sure if any of them work.

I had a look at Nemesis. Never used it, but on the Nexus, the bug list is a very long. For the time being, I'll carry on banging my against a brick wall with FNIS and keep looking on the forum to see if anyone has found a way to make FNIS work with GOG. I play Skyrim with over 600 plugins and a playthrough takes months. A few times I have had game breaking bugs after weeks of play where I had to abandon the playthrough (eg persistent CTD on entering a cell - never found a reason for that). ATM I'm waiting for Odyssey of the Dragonborn to come out, That will be my next big playthrough and if FNIS is still broke, I'll give Nemesis a go. Good to know that Nemesis can stand in for FNIS, so thanks for your post!

That error happened to me when I started with Vortex, and reading through the thread I do not see anyone explaining that it is best run from Vortex. I will try and explain, and then see if I can find the tutorial to link for you.

In Vortex, go to the dashboard, and look for a section titled "Tools". It will have a (+) Icon with "Add Tool", and select "New". In the popup window, for the name, enter FNIS. For the Target, enter the path to GenerateaFNIS_for_Users.exe. As an example, you listed "C:\All My Games\Skyrim Anniversary Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\GenerateFNISforUsers.exe". Leave the command line blank, as parameters are not needed. And lastly, For Start In, put the folder it is in, "C:\All My Games\Skyrim Anniversary Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users\".

Save the tool config, and an entry will be added in the tools list for FNIS.

To run FNIS, put your mouse over the Icon itself, which will add a right facing arrow, and click it. It will launch, and should operate properly.

FNIS works for me, so let me know if this gives you a different result.

Hopefully the link works, if not then web search for Vortext FNIS Setup and it was result #1 for me.

Hope this helps! Have a great day!
I am using the Skse64 GOG version. In the .7z I downloaded was a read me file i promptly ignored. It tells exactly where to install the files in the game folder. I am guessing you did not read the readme file in the archive, like I did. When I finally did, the game started with mods I also set it up in Vortex to start the game.

goggles789: So, has anyone gotten their mods to work with Skyrim SE? I downloaded a couple from Nexus and can't get them to work.

I'm using Mod Organizer 2.

I'm using SKSE.

I updated my registry file path.

Been trying everything I could with no results.
Can't get anything other than SKSE launcher and ENB binary to actually work. If I had known what a shoddy version of skyrim this was I would have saved my money. As it is I have turned in a refund for this hot pile of garbage. If GoG doesn't care enough to give us a proper version of Skyrim that is capable of actually using mods; then they don't deserve my money. I'll just go back to steam and deal with DRM while being able to actually have the freedom to use mods.
